MANILA, Philippines — For the fourth straight tournament, Filipina wunderkind Alex Eala hurdled her opening match, this time scoring a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 upset of WTA No. 190 Laura-Ioana Paar of Romania last Tuesday in the W25 Trophee Dela Ville in Grenoble, France.
A well-rested Eala survived 10 double faults and wore down the 32-year-old Paar, who boasts a solid resume with over 300 matches and 13 ITF titles under her belt.
The 15-year-old Eala faces tournament No. 7 and WTA No. 164 Cristina Bucsa of Spain in the second round today, eyeing a fourth straight quarterfinals appearance in her second year in the women’s pro circuit.
