Editorial: They are human, too Times Union Editorial Board FacebookTwitterEmail THE ISSUE: A court can’t seem to get a federal detention center to vaccinate people in its care. THE STAKES: ---- A little less than 9 percent of Americans have been infected with the coronavirus. In the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility where immigrants are detained, however, the infection rate is more than 25 percent. Yet even with a court order, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can’t seem to get vaccines to detainees most likely to become gravely ill and die should they contract COVID-19. For some reason, this problem appears to be ICE’s alone. Prison advocates say no other federal agency is having trouble getting vaccines for incarcerated people. Which raises the question of whether ICE’s problem is logistical or institutional in an agency that came to be the face of former President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant bigotry and inhumane policies.
