Elmer's Island has reopened for the first time since Hurricane Zeta


The refuge, along La. 1 just west of Grand Isle, features saltwater marsh, coastal dunes and beaches. It's open from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
Road repairs and other projects were completed during the closure to restore the area and to improve recreational access, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says. The agency has installed culverts in four areas, built kayak launches off the access road, contracted trash removal services and started a beach shuttle service for visitors. Contractors are finishing an observation deck for birding and other activities.
The new public shuttle service will run through November. Here is the schedule:
