Why such weakness at the beginning of earnings period, yesterday down in the triple digits and were looking at a decline now of 265 points on the dow. So weve had a very nice bounce off of the september lows and the market basically recovered pretty much what we had lost during september. But i think now the markets are really starting to focus on two things, this virus that simply will not go away and obviously is getting worse on a daytoday basis and the second thing is at least the possibility of a blue wave coming in the election and if that were to happen, what does that really mean from an Economic Perspective . Global Economic Perspective. Those two things are starting to worry people and i think people in general, investors in general are trying to get defensive and prepare for it. Maria so what do you want to do now going into the election . Do you sit on the sidelines, sit on cash until we know what policies are going to drive did day . Or do you buy into some of this weakness . Well, i think in the short run you look at your winners. I mean, if youve owned some of these Large Company tech stocks, if youve owned healthcare yeartodate, youve done very, very well. And with the prospect at least that you could have a higher Capital Gains rate next year, why not harvest some profit, raise cash a little bit. Were sitting with about 10 of cash. I dont want to go into the election with anything less than 10 cash. If we get volatility after the election, that would be i think a great buying opportunity. But you have to at least contemplate that we could be looking at higher taxes next year, that regulatory events are going to be much, much stricter next year, that we could be looking at environmental and Energy Impact with a Different Administration in washington. So these are real important issues that you have to start focusing on now. You cannot wait until january to do that kind of work. Maria yeah. Ive been looking at the Capital Gains tax and the fact that youre going to see that Capital Gains tax go from 23 all the way you up to 39. 6 would indicate to me that thats going to be the thinking after the election, if investors are sitting on a lot of gains theyre going to say im going to realize those gains now while i can get a 23 tax rate, rather than 39. 6 next year. In that vein, if joe biden wins do you believe well see a market selloff after election day. Thats what scares me, maria, is are people going to wait until after the election and then make those decisions, we could have a 10 pullback just in that contemplation. So why not harvest some profits now before the results of the election are there and then you can always buy back in. Theres never anything wrong with harvesting some profit. So weve had some good winners in our portfolios. Its time to put that money on the sidelines and be prepared. I think were going to have a pullback. I dont think its going to be dramatic. I think 10 is reasonable and i think that does give us a buying opportunity for next year. But you dont wait until after the storm hits to start boarding up your house. You do it ahead of time. And did so sometime at the end of 2019 and when asked about it the fbi referred comment to the u. S. Attorneys office for the district of delaware. So and they declined to comment one way or another about confirming the existence or nonexistence of an investigation. So it was significant enough that it he attracted the attention of Law Enforcement which means that obviously somebody looked into it but we dont know what the status of that investigation, if there is one, and whether thats ongoing or not. As to criminality, i mean, you know, the first issue here is that its obvious now that Vice President biden was not telling the truth. He actually did apparently meet with a burisma, an official with that company and hunter biden was obviously involved in setting that up while he was on the payroll for burisma. So the question naturally arises, if the Vice President wasnt telling the truth about that, what else is he not telling the truth about. This morning the new New York Post<\/a> headline is the following. They just released emails revealing hunter biden purchased lucrative deals involving chinas Largest Energy<\/a> company as well. The emails reveal hunter biden tried to cash in big. This was discovered by the owner of a Computer Repair<\/a> shop in delaware, who said hunter biden brought in his computer for service and never picked it up. Youve been talking about this, something was to come for some time. First, tell me what happened here. They give it to the fbi but you also had a copy of it. We havent heard any of this out of the fbi so when did you first receive this information and turn it over to [ laughter ] of course you havent heard anything from the fbi. But for the second half of the year, they see half of 2020, fiscal, this is their fiscal Fourth Quarter<\/a>, strong adjusted earnings per share growth. They say the covid19 effects on the company are subsiding and that theyre starting to see recovery in key markets. Theyre giving us guidance. Mark, ill kick it off with you, your take on the markets and whats driving things here. Is this a new revelation of european economies having to lock down again . Is this about the broader backdrop in a slow economy . Look, so as each day passes, it looks more and more like a stimulus plan is not going to happen before the election. The markets starting to reflect that. Nancy pelosi seems completely unwilling to budge. The white house just recently upped their ante to 1. 8 trillion. That was a significant increase. It seems like its getting blown up for political reasons. So, look, the market in my opinion is not expecting any stimulus may nor, at least anymore, at least until 2021. Whats probably more likely is you see a mini deal in the interim where they can agree on certain initiatives, like replenishing the ppp program. But overall, stocks continue to grind higher. They look strong. I think the longterm up trend stays intact. Maria well, thats what i was going to say. This market even with these couple of days of declines, nancy, this market is still near record highs. So what is that telling us . Weve got september retail Sales Numbers<\/a> coming out tomorrow. We are expecting the numbers to point to an increase of seventenths of a percent month over month and fivetenths of a percent exautos. What are you expecting on retail sales, nancy . What will this means for overall Consumer Spending<\/a> going into the Fourth Quarter<\/a>. I know youre expecting a vshaped recovery. Gives us a sense of what the backdrop looks like right now. The market has a tremendous run. Theres a wall of worry. I think thats healthy to every once in a while consolidate and regroup. Bottom line is, we have had a vshaped recovery. We think were moving into a sustained expansion. And net, youre going to see job growth. Jobs have increased dramatically. Thats supporting Consumer Spending<\/a>. Even though youve seen the extra Unemployment Benefits<\/a> fade, Consumer Spending<\/a> in september will post another solid increase. 0. 7 , 1 roughly, still very strong increases in retail sales. Supporting the roughly 37 to 40 increase we probably saw in 3q, real Consumer Spending<\/a>. For the Fourth Quarter<\/a>, you will see a slow daven. Down. Theres no question. You cant continue to increase at those huge numbers. I think youre moving into a sustained Consumer Spending<\/a> outlook. We have a Daily Consumer Confidence<\/a> survey of eve. Even though you dropped the extra benefits, our survey hasnt dropped. Its been relatively stable in october and i think thats for several reasons. One importantly, jobs. Job gains are continuing although they are going to slow some. So a healthy economic backdrop, reflected in the market and its been driven by housing, manufacturing, Capital Spending<\/a> in general, technology, healthcare. Those are big parts of the economy. So, yes, unfortunately many people are still out of a job but the healing process has been very, very significant and it continues into 2021. Maria and i know that the imf is lifting its 2020 Global Growth<\/a> expectations. Nancy, you focused in your most recent note on china and what chinas recovery is showing us about the world. The Fourth Quarter<\/a> gdp growth, we are expecting to see lower growth in gdp amid the stalled stimulus talks. What does a china recovery say for the world, nancy . So china was first into this mess and china was first out. And china is the one thats also showing us first on covid, you can indeed contain it, control it. You have seen that actually in other asians economies too. I think thats an important backstop to the concern thats now rising with whats going on in europe and here in the United States<\/a>. Second, china is still the second largest economy in the world and to the extent they have moved into a sustained expansion, the data quite frankly in september was stronger than i expected from car sales to the pmi that recently came out, that if china is moving into a sustained expansion, its going to help boost Global Growth<\/a> via trade. That is Global Growth<\/a> trade is not dead. Globalization is not dead. China is a very important part of the global export market, helping to boost some of its neighbors, helping to boost europe, its going to help even the United States<\/a>. It will help multinational earnings. So, yes, china is kind of the forgotten economy right yo now n though its the second largest economy in the world and a you how important it is to the support to Global Growth<\/a>. It is a new china economy, though, also. Its an economy thats shifting from old heavy industry into focusing more on consumer, technology, healthcare. And finance. Its a maturing economy. Its going to grow incrementally slower but net a boost for Global Growth<\/a>. Maria mark, you see a market down 260 points this morning. Would you be buying into the weakness . Yes. So as a long as that longterm up trend is intact, pullbacks are buyable. But in my opinion, this is still a stock pickers market. Theres going to be clear winners, clear loser as the world continues to transition into this new normal. You want to be in the right industries, whether med tech and cloud and price matters. The number one determinant of longterm performance is the price you pay to get into a stock. Find good stocks with strong growth stories that are trading at a reasonable price, thats the key. So happy to hear that. Its just incredible to me that this coronavirus affects people so differently. Some people have absolutely no symptoms and you quarantine and youre back at work the next week. So its just wild, right, how this one thing i would encourage everybody is after you recovered, donate blood, participate in surveillance studies, do your part to help others. Maria okay. All right. Lets talk about the hearing. Give me your takeaway from the first three days of the confirmation hearings of judge barrett. I think judge barrett, she was more than for the entire democrat membership on the Judiciary Committee<\/a>. She went in without notes. There was a lot of hypocrisy going on. They were asking her to take a position they knew she count. They understood she couldnt do that. They tried to make it a thing but it fell flat. I think the American People<\/a> are very impressed with judge barrett. I am. And i look forward to supporting her nomination. Maria its just an extraordinary moment in time that we are in right now. Youve got massive pushback from the president s critics on what will be likely a third scotus appointment by this president in four years and then youve got all of this other pushback of real wrongdoing that were seeing. Secretary of state mike pompeo example told reporters that the state department is doing everything it can to release additional e mails from Hillary Clinton<\/a> after President Trump<\/a> said he was not happy with the state department having not released the e mai email as she worked on a private server. Then weve got the other story this morning about hunter biden. Your thoughts on where we are in terms of the media and its refusal to acknowledge news. They wont admit that President Trump<\/a> was spied on, unlawfully. They wont admit that it was the story that Hillary Clinton<\/a> dreamed up that he colluded with russia and now theyre not admitting any wrongdoing on joe bidens part and we know that his son, hunter, accepted one andahalf billion from china, 50,000 a month from ukraine while his father was the sitting Vice President<\/a>. I tell you, theres a lot packed into what you just said, maria. I think we need full transparency. We should see the emails. Secretary pompeo is going by the book to make sure theyre released properly. The revelations from hunter biden are not covered by any other networks but its real and its something that should be investigated and joe biden, Hillary Clinton<\/a>, everyone should have transparency. Much the same way i expect my opponent to have a little more transparency with the latest allegations that hes admitted to over the last couple weeks. Maria tell me more about that, senator. Well, my opponent has been running on a premise of truth and honor and last week he admitted to the fact that he had an affair with the wife of a combat veteran over the past couple of months. His entire campaign was premised on what we all know now is a lie and i think he needs to come before the press and explain things. Keep the family out of it. When you run on the premise of truth and honor and youve been untruthful and dishonorable, thats an important thing for the people of North Carolina<\/a> to understand. Maria understood. Understood. Right now, there is a lot of dirt coming out of a lot of people in a political environment, 19 days before the election. Senator, what can you tell us about the polls and how youre feeling about the senate . Because we had a report yesterday where an engineer who looked at google has uncovered a plan at google to help flip the senate and, you know, you type in google in the search line, flip, and the first thing that comes up is flip the senate. I mean, these are little tricks with the algorithm that i think google did do in 2016 in terms of you type in Donald Trumps<\/a> name, you get tons of negative stories about him. You type in Hillary Clinton<\/a>s name you get mother theresa type stories in it. This is what social media is doing. They too have chosen a side, senator. What are you going to do about it . Well, i think the Judiciary Committee<\/a> needs to take up the very important question of whether or not these are publishers and whether or not theyre controlling the narrative. You heard about the New York Post<\/a> article thats been suppressed on social media. I believe that there is a systematic approach to manipulating peoples opinions with respect to the folks theyre going to vote for. I think they have to be held accountable and we have to recognize this is just not the way to run in a democracy. We need the facts out there. People should be held accountable for false information. But big Tech Companies<\/a> need to be held accountable for influencing what information gets out there and what information doesnt. I think its something that well take up in the Judiciary Committee<\/a> probably several committees in the senate and well have to rethink how they operate moving forward. Maria so what is the likelihood in 2021 that we see that Liability Protection<\/a> that these social medias enjoy, that section 230 . What is the likelihood that that goes away, senator . Well, i think theres a very good chance that things are going to be tightened. Whether or not it goes completely away for players in the industry who still can fit into that nonpublisher category, we can have that discussion but clearly i think some that are enjoying those protections now, we have to rethink. With respect to the phones, i found it fascinating. A number of instances during the Mueller Investigation<\/a> i and other witnesses were absolutely threatened with additional charges if we had lost any amount of paper or anything on our phones, if we deleted texts. I find it unbelievable theyre allowed to get away with wiping their phones accidentally. These are prosecutors, particularly one of the lead prosecutors, andrew wiseman. He doesnt do anything by accident. So its very frustrating to see kind of this dual system of justice that we have and this is exactly why i go into it in my book and i hope the American People<\/a> can see that the standards that we have in the Justice System<\/a> have to be fixed in order for our country to be better for it. And as far as the Mueller Investigation<\/a> maria how will it be fixed . Go ahead. There needs to be reform. As i went through the Mueller Investigation<\/a>, somebody said to me there is the department of just us and that was implying that the department protects its own. The fbi protects its own. And we really need to take a critical look. Look, theres nobody thats done a better job of getting this information out than President Trump<\/a>. I mean, look at how much we know today versus three years ago. This is not conspiracy theories father more, its not opinions. We actually have evidence and facts of people trying to take down a president. And in that process, they went after a number of us to try to get to the president and it didnt work. They failed. I know, the coup that failed is chapter two in my new book, i called it the coup that failed because it clearly was a coup, whether it be creating this story by Hillary Clinton<\/a> of President Trump<\/a> colluding or all of the ill legal wire taps that were going on. We finally got news today that former associate Deputy Attorney<\/a> general bruce ohr is stepping down from the department of justice, the husband of nellie ohr who worked at fusion gps who was handing over information from fusion gps, made up stuff on the president to the doj and the fbi. He left the Justice Department<\/a> on september 30th ahead of the release of the disciplinary review by senior officials. Hes been scrutinized for his contacts with Christopher Steele<\/a> while his wife worked at fusion gps which wrote the dossier. They hired Christopher Steele<\/a> to come up with this phony russian dossier. What a do you say to some people in america, i think half of the country will not even start to accept this idea that President Trump<\/a> was set up, that his campaign was set up. You are actual living proof of it. Exactly. Its so hard to believe that we actually have people inside our Government Agencies<\/a> that would take on an effort like this. And i think thats what makes it so unbelievable. Look, its taken a lot of time for the truth to come out and i think the truth will continue to come out as we uncover new evidence, as documents are declassified. I think its ab absolutely important that the American People<\/a> have the proof, the evidence and transparency with their government institutions and people in it. So its quite ironic that i think most of Major Players<\/a> involved in the investigation including bruce ohr are gone, either fired, terminated, left on their own accord. There are very few left in the investigation. I think as the evidence continues to come out the American People<\/a> are going to learn a lot more and its going to be disappointing that our government allowed these things to happen. Maria well, they may not learn anything. I mean, you know, two weeks ago i reported exclusively that we were not going to get a Durham Report<\/a> before the election. Were not going to get any indictments of before the election. Theres a major debate going on within the doj according to my sources that, you know, they dont want to say or have any prosecutions because it looks political around an election. Thats why you have prosecutors stepping down like john bash who recently stepped down and if joe biden wins and hes up in the polls, its likely that this entire thing goes away, rick. Walk us through, before you go, your experience with the mueller investigative team. What happened . Absolutely. Yeah, look, it was a hour ofly figure experience many i horrific experience. How do you allocate capital you looked at macrostory over your yes, sir to guide you in terms of allocating capital.
