Feds designate Pinelands road network as N.J.’s third national scenic byway Updated Feb 17, 2021; Posted Feb 17, 2021 The Pinelands Scenic Byway, a network of three dozen roads through five southern New Jersey counties, has been designated a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Department of Transportation.New Jersey Pinelands Commission Facebook Share Federal officials have officially named a 130-mile route through the New Jersey Pine Barrens as a national scenic byway, a designation that regulators and friends of the pinelands say will increase awareness of the environmentally sensitive region’s beauty and historical significance, and boost local tourism. “We are thrilled to learn of this designation, which will place a spotlight on the byway and the beauty of the Pinelands,” Nancy Wittenberg, executive director of the New Jersey Pinelands Commission, a regional regulatory body with jurisdiction over development and other matters within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve a million-square-acre expanse of evergreens and sandy soil in the southeast corner of the state.
