Repository staff report CANTON TWP. – Firefighters spent nearly 12 hours battling a pesky blaze at the PSC Metals scrap yard Wednesday. Plumes of thick, black smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters from multiple departments responded to the scene. People were urged to avoid the area around U.S. Route 30 and Shepler Church Avenue SW. No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation. Firefighters were called to the property at 3101 Varley Ave. SW at 12:54 p.m. where a deep pile of scrap metal measuring 100 feet by 40 feet and towering 30 feet high caught fire. The Canton Township Fire Department reported difficulty with having enough water to fight the fire because of "the lack of adequate positive water supply (hydrants & pressure) on the property."
