Bill 17 (its proper title is The Disclosure to Protect Against Domestic Violence Act) came into effect in Alberta a week ago. Because of the seriousness of the law — named after a British woman murdered by her intimate partner — nobody really paid much attention to the fact it became effective on April 1, known colloquially as April Fools’ Day. But the link is still niggling at the back of the mind that this law is somewhat of a lame joke.
