Foreigner Find Replacement for Thom Gimbel Music Luis Maldonado, who used to play guitar for Pat Monahan-fronted band Train, has become a new member of Foreigner after one of their members quit earlier this year. May 23, 2021 Thom Gimbel in Gimbel exited the group after almost 30 years recently, and his former bandmates have wasted no time in lining up his successor. Bassist Jeff Pilson tells UltimateClassicRock Foreigner auditioned several multi-instrumentalists but none of them were as good as Gimbel, and that forced the band to try a new direction. "Most of Thom's gig was playing guitar," Jeff says. "That was the bulk of it. Yes, he did play keys; yes, he did play sax; yes, he did play flute - which was wonderful. But at least four-fifths of the time, he's playing guitar, so it made sense to get another guitar player."
