Gelsinger asks EU to pay full cost of European fab Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger (pictured) is reported to have asked EC Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton for $9.7 billion to build a fab in Europe during their meeting in Brussels this morning. “What we’re asking from both the U.S. and the European governments is to make it competitive for us to do it here compared to in Asia,” Gelsinger told Politico Europe. As part of his plans to set up a foundry business, Gelsinger envisaged two fabs in Arizona costing $10 billion each and one in Europe. If the European fab is equivalent to the Arizona fabs then it won’t cost Intel anything at all.
