As a child, George Nkencho’s dream was to play football for Manchester United, but following the murder of a close friend in 2010 his later life became afflicted by mental health issues. Nearly ten years ago, Mr Nkencho described himself as ‘self-driven, well-mannered and very disciplined’ when writing about his passion for football. In his online football CV, the talented striker, whose family comes from Nigeria, boasted of having won multiple trophies and medals for player of the year during his time with several clubs in his locality. When reading about his aspirations and achievements, you would never know that the young Dubliner was still desperately trying to come to terms with the tragic death of his friend, Toyosi Shittabey. Like George, the Nigerian-born student had played football with Insaka Ireland, a soccer team that trains African youths in Ireland. But in 2010, his life was cut short when he was fatally stabbed in Tyrrelstown. He was just 15 years old.
