May 6, 2021 at 4:49 PM HOBOKEN, NJ – The crowd gathered on the eastern edge of Pier A Thursday had a beautiful sunny afternoon—a stark contrast to the devastating wind, rain and storm surge that pushed through weak spots in Hoboken’s waterfront nearly eight-and-a-half years ago, inundating the Mile Square City with one of the most devastating and costly natural disasters this country has ever seen. With former Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer opening the ceremony, Governor Phil Murphy and United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Marcia Fudge today officially “broke ground” on the Waterfront portion of Rebuild by Design’s Hudson River Project in Hoboken. Funded by $230 million for Superstorm Sandy recovery from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Rebuild By Design has been in the planning stages for several years and is intended to protect communities along the Hudson River from storm surge flooding and rising sea-level threats posed by climate change.
