Grand Prairie will hold special election to fill Jim Swafford’s council seat after his death from COVID-19
The District 2 council member died Dec. 1 from complications from the virus.

Grand Prairie will hold a special election to fill former council member Jim Swafford’s District 2 seat, following his death from COVID-19 complications on Dec. 1.
The special election is set for Feb. 27. The newly elected official would complete Swafford’s term, which expires May 2022.
Swafford, 84, had been an integral part of the city’s leadership since the late 1970s, when he was a council member and served as mayor pro tem. He was elected to represent District 2 in 1998 and had been reelected eight times since 1999. He was named mayor pro tem in 2000, 2004, 2011 and 2015.
