TV REVIEW In HBOâs âMare of Easttown,â Kate Winslet is investigating a murder â and maybe her own life By Matthew Gilbert Globe Staff,Updated April 15, 2021, 5:37 p.m. Email to a Friend Kate Winslet in the HBO series Mare of Easttown.Michele K. Short/HBO âMare of Easttownâ is a murder mystery, but only generally speaking. The new HBO miniseries is more precisely a relentless and stirring portrait of a small-town Pennsylvania woman caught between her tenacious resilience and her unexplored grief. Sheâll talk plainly about her losses, which we learn about slowly across the seven episodes; but she canât afford to let them sink from her head to her heart. She is a single-parent police detective supporting her extended family, and drive â not neutral and definitely not reverse â is the only option she sees.
