Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins will retire later this year after spending 47 years in law enforcement — but policing was not always the future he saw for himself. “When I was in high school, my original plan for a career was a commercial airline pilot,” Jenkins said. “But when I was getting ready to graduate high school, it was right around the time the Vietnam War was ending, so there were tons of pilots available everywhere.” Jenkins went on a police ride along and wrote a report about it for a high school class, he said. His experience inspired him to apply for the police cadet program in West Covina, California, where he worked until he turned 21.
