The State Fair at Springfield runs through Sunday. North Wayne EMS responded to a single-vehicle accident in Orchard Township in Wayne County yesterday morning. According to county deputies, at approximately 11:40, 19-year-old Xenia resident Lindsey L. Scott was eastbound on a county highway in a 2004 Ford Explorer. Police say she swerved to miss a rabbit, lost control, and drove into a ditch. Scott and two passengers were taken to Clay County Hospital. A tow truck was called to the scene, and the vehicle sustained over $1,500 damage. No injuries were reported in an accident north of Boyleston Sunday on Highway 15. Deputies say 57-year-old Carmi resident Charles A. Shorb was westbound in a 1991 Peterbilt semi when a piece of wood came off his trailer. The Fairfield Public School District 112 Board of Education met last night and voted 6-1 to follow the state's mask mandate for schools, in which masks are required while indoors and on buses. Heather Trent was the lone dissenting vote. 15 to 20 members of the public were in attendance, and several addressed the board before the vote to ask the board not to abide by the mandate, with several saying the state doesn't have legal authority to enforce a mask madate. Interim Superintendent Diana Zurliene did not have a vote, but she did recommend following the state guidelines, even if she doesn't like it. She says students, by and large, don't have issues wearing a mask and will do what it takes to remain in school and have normal events and activities. She says if wearing a mask can help even a little, it should be done, and legal counsel and insurance carriers are of the opinion the governor does, in fact, have authority to enforce a mask mandate. The Edwards County Board of Education met last night. Superintendent David Cowger said the district has been put on probation by the Illinois State Board of Education in response to the recent vote on optional masking. Should ISBE rule against the county in the probation process, the schools could lose their recognized status. Possible ramifications include a loss of state funding and grants, loss of accreditation, and loss of standing in the IHSA. After a conference call with ISBE, the district will have 60 days to reply, and ISBE will have 15 days to respond with a ruling.
