History of Tcl
People often ask me how I got the idea for Tcl and why it became
popular. In this page I've attempted to reconstruct the thought
processes that led to Tcl and Tk and trace the evolution of Tcl and Tk
from the first idea in 1987 through its development at Berkeley,
Sun, and Scriptics to the formation of the Tcl Core Team in 2000.
Tcl's beginnings were very modest; the
success of the system was quite a surprise to me, and it's only in
retrospect that I've begun to understand the reasons for Tcl's
popularity.
