The initial 88 million payments totaling nearly $158 billion were sent by the Treasury Department last week as most of the country remains under stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents have until August 2 to opt out of the next monthly child tax credit payment, deposited on August 13 in qualifying accounts. The increased child tax credit was automatically registered in the majority of eligible parents in 2021.
