Emerald Fennell (c) directing Carey Mulligan and Laverne Cox Credit: Merie Weismiller Wallace Everyone guessed two female directors would make it into this year’s top five, but only got one of them right – Chloé Zhao, who was a slam-dunk certainty for Nomadland. The next probability was Regina King (One Night in Miami), but her film has slipped dramatically, missing in both Director and Best Picture, and only getting two nods overall. The beneficiary was Emerald Fennell, whose divisive rape-revenge drama Promising Young Woman gained some traction. Carey Mulligan, despite being snubbed by the Baftas, is the favourite to win Best Actress here, and while Fennell is almost guaranteed to lose to Zhao, it’s quite logical that she’ll pick up Best Original Screenplay as a consolation prize.
