Indiana bill changing St. Joseph County judge selection proc

South Bend area state lawmakers and attorneys differ on whether that’s a good thing.
The Indiana House on Wednesday affirmed the Senate’s final version of a bill to change how the county has picked its Superior Court judges for nearly a half-century, giving the governor and county commissioners more power.
The bill next moves to Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb’s desk. Its sponsor, Rep. Mike Aylesworth, R-Hebron, had told a House committee in February that Holcomb’s office had asked for the changes, but the governor’s spokeswoman, Rachel Hoffmeyer, has repeatedly denied that ever happened.
“He will review it,” Hoffmeyer told The Tribune in an email, declining to elaborate.
