Intersections with the most crashes in Chippewa County The Sault News CHIPPEWA COUNTY — Local law enforcement agencies are urging residents to avoid traffic crashes on all roadways as Distracted Driving Awareness Month draws to a close. According to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, over the course of 2015 to 2019, the Upper Peninsula had a total of nearly 44,000 crashes. Chippewa County placed in third place with the most crashes in the Upper Peninsula in that time frame with 4,600 total crashes. “It is imperative that drivers pay attention and avoid distractions while operating a vehicle,” said Sergeant Ben Eckola with the Michigan State Police. “Any activity that takes your eyes off the road or your hands off the steering wheel is potentially dangerous to both you and others on the road. Michigan law prohibits a driver from reading, manually typing, or sending a text message while driving. Exceptions are in place for reporting crashes, crimes, or other emergencies.”
