We recently completed Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April. But it is my hope that the emphasis we’ve placed on getting drivers to avoid distractions and keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel will be something they remember every time they get in the driver’s seat.
As your insurance commissioner, I want to do everything I can to keep tragedies caused by distracted driving from happening as much as possible. This also holds down automobile insurance rates.
When drivers get distracted by texting or using cell phones, setting a GPS, changing the radio station, eating, drinking, putting on makeup or tending to a child in the car, accidents happen. We know that distracted driving crashes put upward pressure on insurance premium rates. ....

DRINKING coffee or water while driving could lead to huge fines as a number of states seek to crack down on distracted drivers with new legislation.
The so-called hands-free laws are being considered in a number of states, including Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and aim to stop drivers from using their phones or other items which may avert their eyes from the road.

Mountain Parkway progress report: Morgan County set for completion this year

Progress continues on the Mountain Parkway Expansion this spring, with completion of the 8.2-mile Morgan County segment in sight.
Asphalt plants have reopened for the year and paving is underway on the new westbound lanes of the Mountain Parkway in Morgan County. Westbound traffic will begin using the new lanes this summer between Exit 57 in Helechawa and Hager in Magoffin County.
Crews are also completing concrete pours on the final bridge in the Morgan County segment. The new bridge began construction in October and crosses KY-134 near the 62-mile marker. Completion of the Morgan County segment is expected in late summer. ....
