THIS refers to the letter ‘A French view of Islamophobia’ (June 20), which seems to be an effort to play with numbers and words. It says there is no state policy of cultural discrimination in France. Really? Then how does it explain the ugly incident in a French municipality where police went to a beach and forcibly tried to remove the garments of burkini-clad Muslim women, saying that those outfits threatened French secularism? Is French secularism so fragile that it is threatened by citizens’ choice of garments? Genuine secularism respects all cultures and religions, while keeping all faiths away from governmental machineries so that all citizens may enjoy equal protections and rights. French secularism has become a farce.
