John Marshall isnât the best example of jurisprudence | Letters Hereâs what readers are saying in Fridayâs letters to the editor. Â Â The University of Illinois at Chicago's John Marshall Law School before the decision to rename it and remove his name. Published 6 hours ago âMedia Bias / Fact Checkâ rates the Chicago Tribune as biased to the âRight Center.â Itâs no crime, but this editorial confirms as much. John Marshall was a lion in the formation of American jurisprudence, it is true. The University of Illinois at Chicago has decided to remove his name from its law school because he was an enthusiastic slave-holder. Thatâs within the schoolâs province. In an historic moment when our eyes are being once again forced open to the persistence of racist savagery and corrosion in this country, itâs a ripe moment for such symbolic gestures. Nothing will ever blot out Marshallâs eminence in American jurisprudence and history. But there have been many American heroes of jurisprudence since Marshall who carry no taint of racist dehumanizing conduct. These are better suited for such an honor in our times. We need real, relatable people as moral guides in this fraught time, and not ghosts from over the horizon.
