But we do want to start here with a series of concerns looming over the holiday including isis, sharks and, of course, the weather. Across america weve got a mix of extreme heat, severe storms and plain old rain, so will it put a damper on your celebration . Lets kick things off with rob who is out this morning in central park. Hi, rob. Hi, paula. It is Independence Day. We are celebrating that and the birth of this great country. And unlike any other holiday this one really depended on the weather because so many Outdoor Activities youve got ball games, hot dog eating contests, parades, fireworks which are very dependent on the weather. Check this out. A place where they have fireworks 365 days a year, disney world, a Natural Light show happening there. Frequent lightning across orlando, and that may be the case as we go through today. All right. Where are we going to see the Severe Weather today . Theres not a whole lot of really intense Severe Weather. Thats the good news, but widespread area of seeing isolated thunderstorms. The heaviest will be across the dakotas and parts of nebraska. The heavy rain, were seeing some of that across parts of northern mississippi, alabama and thats where its going to stay today and across those thunderstorms that develop later on today. All right. Your today forecast will feature a little bit of rainfall across the northeast. Its not raining now in new york city. Thunderstorms will fire across the southeast. Most of the drier air moves into the northeast i think by the time the fireworks hit tonight and the thunderstorms will be spotty across the southeast thats where its going to be the diceiest. But so far here in central park, it is dry and nobody firing up the grill just yet so ill see you back inside in a few, dan. All right, rob. Thank you. Now to the story that broke overnight and speaks to another holiday concern, the safety of fireworks displays. Look at this video out of colorado. An explosion and then fireworks flying directly into a crowd of thousands of people, many of them treated for injuries, and abcs ryan smith is here with more. Ryan, good morning. Event organizers told us they had several ambulances on the scene just for situations like this. A good thing because with explosives like that, it could have been a lot worse. A lot worse, ryan, thank you. Appreciate it. Sure. All right, ryan, thanks. Authorities citing no specific plot or threat but concerned about isis and supporters possibly lurking inside the u. S. Obviously a lone wolf is our worst nightmare, but we have nothing to indicate we have any of that going on. The Boston Marathon continues. That attack and others in tunisia and france recently on the minds of tourists hitting the national mall. You just pray it doesnt happen. I see the police all over the place. Reporter an important reminder, if you see something today, say something. Thats what that 911 caller did out at navy yard earlier this week. Thought she heard gunfire. Turned out to be a false alarm but, dan, police say thats exactly what you should do. Dan. Devin, thank you. We move to the safety issue at the beach. Sharks. It took a pretty big chunk out of my right leg so i started punching the shark and then it grabbed my back. Reporter already this morning, you can see people fishing out on the pier. So far not too many people here on the beach but it is early on this holiday and beaches are expected to be packed. Paula. All right, phillip, thank you. And there is outrage across the country after a terrifying attack at a popular tourist attraction in San Francisco. It left a young woman dead, murdered right in front of her father. Officials believe that it was a random act. The suspect is a convicted felon and undocumented immigrant who some say should have never been back on the streets. We get more on this tragedy now from aditi roy. Good morning, aditi. Reporter good morning, paula. Such a sad story here in San Francisco. We have a city law, City Ordinance which makes it very clear that we dont turn people over to i. C. E. Reporter that policy now being questioned. Immigration Authorities Saying the refusal to detain sanchez illustrates the importance of jurisdictions working with i. C. E. In order to avoid needless tragedy in their communities. Ill never get to tell my sister that i love her again. Reporter as sanchez remains here at the county jail this morning, San Francisco police say they are stepping up security at the embarcadero this holiday weekend. Dan. Aditi, thank you. Such a tough story and so many questions here, so lets bring in abc news consultant and former fbi profiler brad garrett. Brad, weve got i. C. E. And the San Francisco pd pointing fingers at one another. Do you have a sense of who is actually in the wrong here or are they both in the wrong possibly . Well, i think what youve got, dan, is two organizations that have, you know, they have a different mission. I dont think its a matter of miscommunication. As this particular person just noted on camera, they have an ordinance in San Francisco not to enforce i. C. E. Or immigration warrants. So, you know, naturally driven by a number of reasons, so i think they just chose not to do it and let him go and unfortunately weve had this horrible tragedy. Whats the rationale behind this law that prevents the Law Enforcement officials in San Francisco of notifying i. C. E. Or turning somebody over to i. C. E. . Because, dan, immigration laws are a big rub, particularly in ethnically Diverse Communities obviously like San Francisco, and so the police want to separate themselves from doing Immigration Enforcement because it causes such consternation in various communities within San Francisco. They are there to build a relationship with the community, not keep it in fear and thats really the big issue here. Whoever is right, one woman is dead, and there are a lot of questions being asked this morning. Brad garrett, we appreciate your guidance on this saturday morning. Thank you very much. And finally, after arod got that milestone baseball back, he and the yankees took the field against the tampa bay rays, and check out what happens late in the game. A pigeon suddenly darting across the field straight at rays outfielder kevin kiermaier, who was at first base. He ducks, he was not hit by the pigeon. He was okay but he acts like hes been struck by lightning. Yeah, i was at the game too. He stayed on the ground a long time afterward. The pigeon landed and kept walking around.
