Announcer live where you live, this is ferocious irma packing winds powerful enough to rip the roof off a house in miami, and its far from done with florida. Good evening. Im eric thomas. Live doppler 7 shows where the hurricane is right now, moving north across the state of florida. Meteorologist lisa argen will have details in just a moment but heres the latest on irmas impact. Its now a category 2 storm. Irma made landfall in florida along the southwest coast this afternoon. The tomorrow is blamed for at least four deaths in florida, including a sheriffs deputy, and that is in addition to the 27 deaths reported in the caribbean. Nearly 3. 5 Million People are without power. Thats more than a third of all power customers in florida. More than 175,000 people are spending the night in a shelter. Abc News Reporter Marcy Gonzalez has the latest from tampa. Reporter hi, eric. We are getting pounded by rain. The wind is now so strong that fire rescuers say if theres an emergency, they wont respond because it is just too dangerous. Irma battling the sunshine state. Wind gusts topping 140 miles an hour, tearing the roof on this building. Oh, my god reporter toppling trees and construction cranes, snapping power lines. First making landfall in florida in the keys, then again on the west coast. The monster storm impacting the entire state. Streets flooded in miami. Tornadoes touching down in Central Florida. I ran screaming through the glass door closed. Reporter and the major concern overnight on the gulf coast, the storm surge with the hurricane sucking water out of canals and tampa bay before sending it rushing back in. Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. Were about to get punched in the face. Reporter in naples, neighborhoods under water but still a sigh of relief. We know that the storm surge models of 8 to 10 feet are likely not going to occur. We have dodged a bullet. Reporter at this shelter, one of 500 open across the state, irmas fury on full display, cracking the front door and knocking out electricity. Pandemonium. We were very nervous, very scared. Reporter now about a third of people in this state are without power as irma keeps making its way up the coast. In tampa, florida, marci gonzalez, abc7 news. And abc7 news meteorologist lisa argen has been tracking irmas shifting path and is here now with a look at where the storm is now. It is weakening as it moves into northern florida. As you look at these bright bands, you can see how huge it is. In fact, this is a 400 mile wide storm. Its moving quicker to the northnorthwest, and as it moves over land, it is getting shredded apart. But it holds to hurricane status until tomorrow morning. Look at the rain in georgia, also into alabama, tennessee, and the carolinas. So we are looking at not only the heavy rain right now, but this northeastern quadrant is where were getting some of the tornado watches and the very, very heavy rain. You can see in the bright red were still under hurricane warning for much of florida, central and northern florida. Then Tropical Storm warnings through georgia and South Carolina. Current wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour in melbourne and orlando, and they have picked up three to five inches in orlando and Daytona Beach in the last hour. So some wild weather in florida. Our weather is getting cooler, but we also have a chance of some showers. Well talk about that in a few minutes. Eric . Lisa, thank you very much. In florida, the decision to leave or stay was a difficult one for many in the hurricane zone. Abc7 News Reporter lilian kim joins us now with that part of this developing story. Lilian . Eric, florida residents were warned, and despite those warnings, some people chose to stay. Whether it was a good idea depends on who you talk to. Tampa has been hard by irma. This woman knows first hand. She and her family decided to ride out the storm largely because of their four pets. With irma pounding floridas west coast, she has big regrets. I almost feel like crying. Im very stressestressed. I wish i had evacuated because even now im talking to you, and i hear the winds outside and the tree outside my window hitting my roof. And im worried its going to fall onto my house. Reporter others say it hasnt been that bad. Mike shumanns nephew lives in a condo building in naples where hes managed to stay safe. Me and my father managed to cover the lanai with those so the wind wont push through. Branches and trees have fallen all over, but everything is okay. Reporter as for those who heeded the warning, they made it to safety but only after a grueling drive. This man wonders what things are like back home. You have mixed feelings. You have glad that you made the right decision to get out, but you dont know what the heck to expect when you go back. Reporter a sentiment likely shared by thousands of evacuees who chose to escape irmas destructive path. Lilian kim, abc7 news. Airports across florida are closed and look much different than they did a few days ago. Airlines are not serving airports in miami, fort lauder day, orlando, and tampa, and theres no word yet on when theyll resume flights. Law enforcement is searching for suspects, possibly two women accused of shooting an off duty East Palo Alto police officer. It happened in lathrop in San Joaquin County around 2 00 this afternoon. Officer steve long was shopping at a target store when one, possibly two suspects tried to carjack him. He lives in san rafael and was shot twice. Hes now recovering from surgery at San Joaquin County General Hospital and is expected to survive. Its not clear if the suspect or suspects got away with ongs vehicle. San francisco firefighters are remembering one of their own who died on the job this morning. Other firefighters found battalion chief Terry Smerdel unresponsive inside his office. He had just returned to his fire house in china toup from a call. Flags are flying at half staff outside station 2 on powell street and in all of San Francisco franciscos 44 fire houses in smerdels honor. Friends and fans remember the popular deejay who was murdered in San Francisco, and his killing is resonating inside San Franciscos transgender community. Abc7 news was in the tenderloin for a vigil honoring anthony torres. Many knew him as bubbles. Bubbles was playing music when an argument erupted and he was shot early saturday morning. Nobody deserves to be treated like this. So were here to all his friends here and family to make sure that his voice is remembered. Friends describe torres as also being an artist and an activist in the troiansgender community. They fear he may have been targeted because of how he identified. This is a hate crime. We need the city of San Francisco to respond accordingly. We need the Police Department to respond accordingly. Police say theres no evidence to suggest its a hate crime. Detectives a social media post showing a Police Encounter in the east bay has gotten more than 8 million views in just one day. Now a Uc Berkeley Police officers treatment of a Street Vendor shown in that video has led to an effort to get him off the force. That story is coming up. Resilient by design. A facebook video of a food vendor in berkeley being cited by Campus Police for not having a permit has sparked so much outrain, theresou outrage, theres a push to get him fired. Back up. Back up. Thats not right. Reporter the one filming as Uc Berkeley Police cite this food vendor after the cal game, is martin flores. He says, when he saw this, he was outraged. He chose this one vendor who was selling hot dogs, an individual who was probably vulnerable, an easy target. Flores insists what happened next crossed the line. Are you going to take his hardearned money . Reporter Uc Berkeley Police confirm the officer took the vendors money and booked it into evidence. The vendor, who goes by juan, asked for the money back, but is given a notice to appear in court instead. Flores posted the video on his facebook page. It didnt take long before it was viewed more than 8 million times and shared over 135,000 times. Flores then started this Gofundme Campaign to pay for juans legal defense. The goal was 10,000. Its raised more than double that. Im working for you. Reporter meantime, a separate online petition started to have the officer in question removed from the department. That goal is close to being met. We reached out to uc berkeley officials, who say theyre aware of the incident and are looking into it. Abc7 news. The search is on tonight for whoever stabbed a man to death in downtown petaluma. It happened last night on a pedestrian walkway as nearby bars and nightclubs were closing. A second person was stabbed and woundedment police say the suspect ran into a nearby parking garage and got away. An amtrak train hit and killed a woman today in martinez at the ferry street crossing. Police say she was about 50 years of age and theyre still trying to identiy her. This happened around 11 30 this morning. Police shut down ferry street for nearly two hours. Theyre asking anyone who may have information to give them a call. Building a better bay area took center stage when Creative Minds came together today. Abc7 news was in richmond when ten design teams were selected to take part in a campaign called resilient by design. The program aims to protect bay area residents and cities from being impacted by climate change. We need to adapt as the climate is changing, and that means that cities and counties have to work together. We cant be you know, we cant be parochial in our ideas. We started after hurricane sandy, and the idea was to bring the best minds of the world to the sandy region to build back better than what we had before. The bay area faces a challenge from rising sea levels and both San Francisco and oakland airports are built close to sea level along with many major highways locally. Many marched and even more watched todays pride parade in oakland. Abc7 news was on broadway as people enjoyed the sounds of a marching band and a deejay. Local leaders including oakland mayor libby schaaf joined various Community Groups and contingents from several large employers. This years pride celebration also included the grand opening of oaklands Lgbtq Community center near lake merit. It was a fight to beat the heat today between el cerrito Police Officers and neighborhood kids. And it was a water fight. The el cerrito Police Department hosted its first back to school water play event at arlington park. Snocones and a water skirter Obstacle Course involved. Its been so hot lately, we figured wed have an event where wed have kids come and play with the law enforcement. Its hot, and we get. I forgot my swimsuit, but it still feels good. It was also a dunk tank. Officers say more than 100 kids came out for todays event. They hope to make it bigger and better next year. Announcer now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. Speaking of el cerrito, usually a pretty comfortable area in the bay area, but today 93 degrees. So as we check out some current numbers and view the Clear Conditions here in San Francisco, you know how hot it was, and its still a warm night. In fact, we saw 103 in vallejo. A couple of hundreds inland, and we broke a record in oakland, tied one in santa rosa. 74 right now in San Francisco. 72 in oakland. 77 in san jose. Temperatures arent dropping too quickly. Were in the 60s, half moon bay. But look at inland numbers. Low 80s, fairfield, concord, livermore with 77 in napa. And santa rosa still warm at 73 degrees. So we do have some slightly cooler air. Looking at live doppler 7, youll notice that a lot of cloud cover from the east and south, and it is midlevel cloud cover, not our usual low cloud and fog deck because its this system here. Look at all the lightning strikes. Over 200. Weve had some heavy rain in southern california, and currently rain in San Luis Obispo right now. Some of this energy is going to head to the north in the next few days, and thats why were looking at the possibility of showers as soon as tomorrow and right on through wednesday. So 24 hours ago, you know it was cooler. So we are much, much warmer still at this late hour. Were going to cool off, but its going to take all night long to get there. It will be cooler tomorrow by as much as ten degrees. Chance of showers late in the day. Possible showers tuesday and wednesday. Were talking much, much cooler wednesday and thursday with fall about nine days away or so. Its going to feel like it by the middle of the week. Your hour by hour forecast, weve had the brush of clouds. By tomorrow afternoon, its the low clouds and fog and that steady onshore flow that will continue to keep the temperatures theyre going to be warm, but it will keep them from rising into the upper 90s. So looking at the showers heading into the bay area perhaps by about 6 00, and then look what happens by 9 00, 10 00. Could be scattered all throughout the area. So well watch it for you. They will be light, and we are looking still at that chance continuing into tuesday. Tuesday, numbers are looking even better. Upper 80s inland, but look what happens by wednesday. No red on the map at all. So were just about in the 80s, and that will bring us to below average readings into thursday as well. After that, looks like a bit of a warmup. Picking this up for tuesday morning, your commute may be a few scattered showers. You notice some clouds. Youre also going to notice tomorrow, tuesday, and wednesday its going to feel stickier, but by wednesday afternoon, these showers will be gop. In the south bay, 87.
