the president and first lady attended an outdoor memorial service to pay tribute to the soldiers shot and killed last week by one of their own. more now from abc's marcy gonzalez. ♪ >> reporter: a farewell to the fallen. the three soldiers shot and killed by an army comrade here at ft. hood one week ago. >> that these soldiers were lost at the hands of one of our own makes this tragedy heartbreaking and inexplicable. >> reporter: hundreds of fellow soldiers standing together, honoring sergeants timothy owens, carlos lazaney-rodriguez, and daniel ferguson, sharing prayers for their families. >> when the gunman tried to push his way into the room, danny held the door shut, saving the lives of others, while sacrificing his own. it's said that timothy, the counselor, even then, gave his life walking toward the gunman, trying to calm him down.
