Small fires fueled by extreme winds merged into six massive fires. Burning more than 200,000 acres, destroying 8,900 structures and killing 43 people. The three biggest fires were in sonoma and napa counties. The official state incident report shows they started within 15 minutes of each other. From 9 45 to 10 00 p. M. By midnight, fires were burning in mendocino and lake counties. At first there was nothing. We saw the smoke and then all the flames coming up over the mountain. It happened so fast. We saw the fire coming up over the ridge. The next thing you know, the fire is a block away. We have to evacuate. We got in the car. A big bump on our door. Let me get her feet. When we left, you can see the flames licking the top of the mountain. Then we got the word that we were on fire. Fire burning a lot of houses. A lot of wineries are going. People are losing their homes. This is my neighborhood. In flames. It is Mother Nature at her worst, i guess. These are very rapidly burning fires. There was running in the streets. The wind was unbelievable. The wind keeps changing on us. All these places on fire. This is crazy. I dont know what im going to do next. I dont know what to say. It was just like a dreel. A long, scary night. Still surreal. And it would take 23 days before all the fires were contained. And who could forget this pointed video . The abc7 news crews got of evacuations from Kaiser Hospital in santa rosa. The patients were rushed to other nearby hospitals as the flames breathe down their necks. Kaiser hospital reopened on october 25th. More than two weeks after the unprecedented closure. The medical offices reopened on october 16th. The video was amazing. The ash and rain could combine, only a handful of crews turned up in the santa rosa neighborhood to remove debris. Some of which may be toxic. Officials fear it could be washed into storm drains and creeks and rivers. This rain, we are anticipating collecting samples from the runoff so we can determine whats in it. Are there any heavy metals . Whats the toxicity . Well know more after we analyze the samples. Hazardous runoff, theres erosion and risk of mud slides and flash flooding. Methe fire north of ukiah burned more than 36,000 acres. 325 homes were destroyed leaving a lot of ash and debris, full of dangerous chemicals. The crews have been spraying a special stucco like substance that hardens over the debris to prevent erosion. Our concern was that there was so much debris from these fires, and so much of it was so close to the waterways. And also, the river, that we wanted to be certain it would go into the waterways. And that has been a major effort over the last eight days. Some hazardous areas have been covered over with plastic sheeting. The county is working the army corpor core of engineers. And money donated for relief efforts now making the way to the victims of the blazes. 17 gift cards were delivered last week the lake county students who lost their homes. Additional cards were given to School Officials for students there. Most of napas famous wineries were spared when the fires tore through hills. But as you can see, are this one was not one of them. This is what the winery looked like before the fire. And this is what it looks like now. Drone view 7 was order the winerys tasting room and offices. And you can see, they were completely destroyed. Incredibly, right nearby, this was spared. The winery has promised to rebuild. All the vineyards are fine and so is the current harvest. Damage to the building is estimated to be in the missiles of dollars. And a month after the fires, Sonoma Countys Tourism Industry still struggling to lure visitors back into the wine country. Eric stops live in sonoma where theyre saying, were open for business. One message to get out is come on back. Another message is, we never left. Most of the fire damage left untouched sonomas Tourism Industry. And thats the men to get out. It was dead. Thats how the general manager describes business at glen ellens winery in the immediate aftermath of the fires. The winery was founded by bruce, who managed the doobie brothers for more than four decades. Although there is some damage here. Virtually all the wineries are back open. And all of our vineyards are as pristine as they ever were. That message is not getting out to everyone. The head of the Sonoma ValleyVisitors Bureau says hotels are trying to bounce back from numerous cancellations. I can tell you in some areas, occupancy has dropped by as much as 18 . And a lot of it is with evacuees and people there fema. The fires destroyed thousands of homes and left victims searching for scarce housing. Some are staying in holes like the while they wait to find out what the future holds. Some of the tourist bureaus are getting ready to bust out a new ad campaign to let folks know, theyre open for business. What you saw on television a month ago is history. It is in the past. And were moving forward as a valley. Tourist attractions are predicting that discounts is that promotions will be in the offing. Our skies are blue. The air quality is back to normal. And we want to show our bay area friends and our tourists that people are coming back. At least initially the focus will be getting folks in the bay area who normally come to the windries and napa and sonoma to come back. Lets look at overnight conditions as we get to the wee hours of the morning. Well see pockets of showers and light rain with low temperatures, mainly in the low to mid 50s. Fairly mild air ahead of that frontal system bringing us the rain. Then tomorrow, well see partly to mostly cloudy skies. With some lingering showers and maybe a new wave of showers developing. Highs will be generally in the mid 60s around the bay. And inland. Low 60s on the coast. Lets look at the storm impact scale. This one tonight and tomorrow ranks one on the impact scale. Generally rainfall totals will be about 1,500ths of wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour. Higher gusts in the hills and there are some issues in the burn scar areas. 7 00 this evening. The gustiest will be near coast. But well get stronger gusts all across the area out across the bay. The wind will taper off.
