Disgrace for warning undocumented immigrants about possible i. C. E. Arrests. To me thats obstruction of justice. And in january of this year, mr. Trump lashed out at speaker nancy pelosi, tweeting clean up the streets in San Francisco. They are disgusting. City leaders have always acknowledged that the homeless situation has been one of the citys most challenging problems. Needles and human waste have tarnished the citys image. We stopped to ask a city worker who collects garbage, and, yes, needles, if he has seen a change. Has it gotten worse, better, more, less . Less. Reporter less . Less than before. Than last year. A lot. Reporter it appears he may be right. Numbers from the Health Department show that in 2018, more than 3,825,000 needles were collected. This year, through april 30th, nearly 1,083,000 needles were disposed of. Again, those are only partial numbers. I cant begin to pretend as if i know whats going on in the president s head. I then asked the cochairman of the San Francisco republican party. Is his strategy that lets shame San Francisco. Let me show you what a liberal government looks like. If you vote for a democrat, thats what the nation is going to get . Thats true. And thats what hes showing. And i had to look this up and found that the first Needle Exchange program the city had began in 1988 to help stop the spread of hiv. Im live in San Francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. So, lyanne, with regard to the Environmental Protection agency, exactly what violations are we talking about here . Well, larry, its not clear. The president said yesterday that San Francisco is in total violation, but again, for what. In fact, the head of the epa said he had no comment today. In fact, he said i cant comment on potential enforcement action. But, you know, we dug a little bit deeper. I went to the epa website and found this document with regard to clean water. It says that california, the goal is to reach zero by 2022. And then i found this document also said that a few city, including San Francisco is demonstrating or are demonstrating that trash capture can be an effective solution. So, again, we dont know what the epa is going to come up with. All right. Lyanne melendez reporting. More questions than answers at this point. Another question is where does San Franciscos waste water really go . We know there are a lot of things on city streets that sometimes go down the drain. Abc7 News Reporter liz kreutz went inside the citys largest Sewage Treatment plant and takes us step by step through the process of how it all works. So where does San Franciscos sewage actually go . To understand, you have to go to one of the 20,000 catch basins in the city. Anything a street sweeper doesnt get will go in here. From there, it likely goes here, one of two Water Pollution control plants in the city. This plant treats about 80 of everything that comes through San Francisco. Inside the sewage is sorted and screened. Any solids such as construction material, baby wipes, even needles that make it through the catch basins are filtered out through two different machines. The stuff that does come through are caught in our fine bar screens or in our skimming system. If any debris makes it through that, there is even another line of defense. Then we go into the primary tanks next. The primary tanks are designed to have more Detention Time to allow settables to set and floatables to float. Eventually the solid waste is sorted, taken to a dump and a landfall. The treated water then flows into the bay or ocean. We asked if its different during storms. She said while some debris could get into the ocean, there is another filtering system in place called primary treatment to prevent it. So your fact check of the president s comments is unequivocally false . Were very proud of the system that does a great job separating out solids, organic or otherwise, including needles. Long story short, there are many lines of defense to prevent anything like a needle from getting into the ocean. Liz kreutz, abc7 news. When it comes to protecting the environment, there are planned demonstrations around the world scheduled for tomorrow. The goal is to bring attention to climate change. The Global Climate strike takes place just days before the United Nations Climate Action summit in new york city. And you can help our environment this weekend, saturday is California Coastal cleanup day. This is video from last years event. This year its also the battle for the bay cleanup challenge, where volunteers will remove trash and restore wildlife habitats. The mayors of San Francisco and oakland, they have a friendly bet going on which city can draw more volunteers. Just this week san joses mayor joined in the channel. Now in the current volunteer tally, oakland is winning. You can find a link to register on our website, abc7 news news. Com. The Trump Administration reinstated deferred action, allowing immigrants who are seeking lifesaving medical care to stay in the United States. The announcement comes a week after 24yearold guatemalan citizen isabel bueso spoke to congress as a guest of bay area congressman mark desaulnier. A rare genetic disorder known as mps6. Had services not reinstated this rule, she and other families would have been deported. Also new at 6 00, San Jose State University police have arrested a 17yearold student. Investigators say he had a loaded semiautomatic handgun and knife on campus. The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety asked University Police to help track down the teen after getting a report he recently made online threats. Officers searched his home and found another gun and reloading equipment used to manufacturer more ammunition. The suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall without incident. The university has suspended the teen. The pala street bart station in downtown San Francisco was closed for hours this afternoon because a train hit and killed a person who was on the tracks. This happened around 2 00. The station reopened a little after 4 00. Bart says there are still major delays systemwide as a result of that incident. And thats not the only problem for bart commuters this afternoon. We have some breaking news now. Another problem in the east bay. Train service has stopped between the North Berkeley and richmond stations because of a report of a fire near the tracks in el cerrito. Bart says theyre sending employees to troubleshoot that problem. Bart is telling riders take ac transit buses to get around that closure. The Vallejo Police department is facing three more lawsuits alleging racial profiling and excessive force. All involve African Americans who say they were roughed up by officers during bogus arrests. Eric thomas has the story. Civil rights attorney john burress brought the three plaintiffs into his office to explain why their arrests left them feeling degraded and marginalized. First, adrian burrell. Im not resisting. You may remember the former marine was on his own porch, using his cell phone in january to take video of an officer who had made a traffic stop on his cousin at gunpoint, something he had the legal right to do. Its my understanding that what happened to us was a crime. It was illegal what he did. Burrell said he suffered a concussion. That officer is back patrolling vallejos streets. Delon thurston says in october of last year, she was pulled out of her car during a traffic stop, thrown to the ground and arrested. Like really uncivilized, uncouth gang type of behavior that has to stop. In april, 20yearold Deana Jenkins says she was pulled over at gunpoint while in a car with three girlfriends, tased and then arrested for not having her drivers license with her. It was even more frightening because in february Vallejo Police shot and killed her uncle, willie mccoy in a taco bell parking lot after he passed out in a car with a gun near him. Absolutely i was thinking are these the same officers or something. Burress says its telling that the d. A. Has not pursued charges against any of his clients in any of these cases. He also says the hiring of a new Vallejo Police chief this month may be reason for optimism, but ultimately, it may take a courtappointed monitor to keep the department in line. In our view, it is an outofcontrol department where African Americans and brown people are routinely mistreated. And subject to unconstitutional stops. We heard from Vallejo Police late this afternoon. They said they dont comment on pending litigation, except in this case theyre confident that litigating it will produce the truth behind the allegations. In oakland, eric thomas, abc7 news. Our efforts to build a better bay area mean we spend extra time on the big issues that affect us, like the high cost of housing. New data shows were entering New Territory when it comes to home sales. According to the Bay East Association of realtors. You can actually find houses for sale and take some time deciding if you want one. A far cry from a year ago. Abc7 News Reporter Leslie Brinkley joins us from the Oakland Hills with more on the sticker shock. Leslie . Well, what i heard from the experts today is that were basically entering what many across the country would consider to be a normal real estate market. That is somewhat stable prices, slight increases compared to what the bay area usually experiences with big jumps every year. Year to year, median sales prices down 7 in fremont. 9 in dublin. 11 in, he hercules. Home buyers and home sellers are so used to prices going up yearoveryear, that when prices drop or stabilize, some people are freaking out. Here is what is going on according to data from 34 east bay cities, many had more homes on the market in august when compared to last august. But 21 of them saw prices drop. Some by double digits. With the lower prices, youd expect maybe an increase in sales or bidding wars. It was the opposite. Fewer sales and homes sat on the market in 23 of these cities more much longer than usual. A year ago the average home was up for sale 14 days. Now its 30 days. Does that mean bad luck for sellers . Not really. Look at how rapidly it went up. Lets say maybe were getting to somewhat of a normal market. Many are opting to stay put and launching renovation projects instead of moving. And with new legislation overcapping rents, the unintended consequence could be more homes on the market soon. Weve got a whole bunch of mom and pop rental housing owners that might be looking at these ordinances and looking at these regulations and say you o housing market. Im going sell my unit. Ultimately, whats changing, from what i was told is buyer behavior. People are being patient. Theyre being a little more cautious instead of jumping in with an orb kpaexorbitant bid. I also need to mention that bucking the trend of those price decreases were a few communities where the prices went up in places like alamo, walnut creek and over in san pablo. In oakland, im Leslie Brinkley, abc7 news. Thats interesting. Thank you, leslie. The bay areas housing crisis really does affect us all, and its why we dedicated a week to covering the topic. So if you visit the west side of Treasure Island, youll find that something new and unusual has arrived there. It may also look vaguely familiar. Abc7 News Reporter Wayne Freedman went for a look today. Joining us live now, wayne, i got to admit, i saw some of your tweets. Im looking at the rivets. Ive seen this thing a million times, yet i have no idea what it is. Thats right. Thats it over my shoulder right there behind the palm trees. Lets call this a person and object story. The object has a name. They call it signal. And yes, larry, you stole my line. Its riveting. It has been said that what goes around comes around, but never in this particular form. If you had not known what it was, would you know what it is . No. No. I dont know what this is. And thats from tom laughlin, the man who sculpted it. You like the fact that it vibrates. Though thats hardly the intended function of this steel ring in 14 riveted sections with a light on top, a signal light that you may have seen before and never noticed. That light had been on the bay bridge since the day it opened in 1936, as was the steel, through trains and an earthquake and a demolition. Now some of that same steel is reincarnated as commissioned public art in what might be a perfect spot on Treasure Island in full view of icons older and newer. We just cut some wedges out of the girders and sort of folded them up and welded them back together. And then he put in electric motors for that vibrating resonating effect. Ooh. Ooh. Karen and claire baker sort of stumbled on the installation today. Claire is 92. She watched the original bridge go up. Does she like the design, we ask . It needs more, in my estimation. What does it need . I think it needs a lighthouse over here. But its got a light up there. And thats what she told the sculp sculptor. Did whathe say hurt your feelings . No, absolutely not. He said no, and i believed him. The bay bridge, still controversial. Attend of the day, you can say i can say its interesting. And the interesting just keeps on going. They got the steel, it was covered with paint. So they scraped off the paint. You know what was underneath the paint . The word bethlehem. Thats where the steel came from, bethlehem, pennsylvania. Just one of those strange nuances youll see if you come out here to Treasure Island and take a look at signal. And you can see the light right now. Its on. Live on Treasure Island, Wayne Freedman, abc7 news. All right. Thank you, wayne. This is an interesting story. Yeah. Im still not exactly sure how it all came together there. Right.
