The fire closed several roads for hours which have reopened. News reporter luz pena spoke with one Family Member who recalls a terrifying moments before escaping the flames. Reporter still shaken 17yearold janet cruz describes the moments of fear she had inside her home with her family. I was scared for my sisters. Reporter according to san jose fire the call came in around 1 53 p. M. She saw smoke coming from their neighbors home into their apartment. Her first thought was to save her family. I had to take my sisters out and my mom. I mostly saw the other side and i took my sisters out and got them in the front. Reporter neighbors across the area saw a dark cloud of smoke and called 911. I couldnt see the fire. Just smoke. Black smoke. Reporter san jose fire confirmed the apartment is a single occupancy unit. This neighbor who decided not to show his face in fear of retaliation says the person who lived in the unit where the fire began is known to san jose police. Sometimes i get up 1 00, 2 00 in the morning and i drink a cup of coffee and i just see people just stroll in. Reporter the cruz family says their unit sustained smoke and water damage. Theyre now staying at a hotel nearby provided by the red cross. A total of six people were displaced by this duplex fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. New this morning, also in the south bay, a 63yearold woman is dead after she was hit while crossing the street in san jose. The woman was lying reportedly in the street on oakland road at mckay drive around 5 45 last night. Police say she was not walking in the crosswalk when the driver hit her. This is san joses 29th death this year involving a pedestrian. Last year the city saw 23 deaths. Happening today, a candlelight vigil to honor three teenagers killed in a car crash in pleasanton on christmas. 16yearold Twin Brothers mark anthony and Michael Angelo uris ta and Javier Ramirez died on foothill road. All three were students at dublin high school. Two other teens are in the hospital. Friends of the victims have been placing flowers and candles at the crash site. They were so positive and made everybody laugh and smile. They never had any problems with anybody. Nobody ever had a problem with them. The vigil is tonight at 5 00 at dublin high school. Grief counselors will be available when students return to campus on january 7th. The chp is investigating the cause of the crash. A quickthinking samaritan helped stop a suspected thief in the middle of San Franciscos crowded un plaza. He got a thank you from a woman who had her phone stolen and were learning more about the man and his Nonprofit Organization working to build a better bay area. I heard a woman screaming as she was running after a guy, stop the guy, he took my phone. Reporter kemp says he confronted the suspect running towards him. I told him, give her back her phone. He says what . I said give her back her phone. He reached in his pocket and handed her back her phone. Dewayne is a hero. Reporter minutes later the woman who said she had just got the phone as a gift was overcome with gratitude. I had no idea if someone would stop him. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Tomorrow the core battle continues for a group of mothers occupying a vacant home in oakland trying to challenge an eviction order. The group moms for housing moved into the magnolia street home with their children last month to draw attention to the bay area homeless crisis. A judge ordered them to leave, but hes giving them a chance to make their case for staying. The Real Estate Firm wedgewood says it wants to sell the home to a firsttime home buyer. Sticking to the east bay, fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused fridays fire at a red tagged warehouse in oakland. It was declared unsafe last year, but there were still eight people inside when smoke started. Abc 7 news stopped by to check on the burned building yesterday. Everyone made it out all right. The Oakland Fire Department says the property was red tagged in both april and november. Neighbors have been telling lol politicians and the property is a property. Some of it had to do with the warehouse here and people who are inappropriately living in the warehouse. He was trying to get money from people who didnt have any basically. A tenant says the owner charged people 10 a night to sleep inside. Abc 7 news was not able to reach the owner for comment. Wildfire victims face a december 31st deadline to file a claim against pg e. All part of the companys bankruptcy process. Claims can be submitted for fires that occurred before january 29th of this year. It means those affected by the campfire and north bay fire storm can file. People can submit a claim in person at pg e. Com or claim Service Center i should say or online as i mentioned. Theyre expanding service on 20 busy routes and reducing those with light ridership. The Authority Like many transit agencies nationwide is dealing with fewer people taking busses and trains in favor of Services Like lyft and uber. Vta is putting the resources where the demand is greatest for transit. We have a threshold of about 15 boardings per hour, so anything lower than that we had to take a hard look at, whether it was worth putting out resources in those areas. What happened was, this came from an outside, someone is using the same user name and password elsewhere that had that was gained from that and then they logged into that users account through that.
