In west oakland, police just finished searching a warehouse after spending more than 11 hours on the scene. Officers first went to this building on adeline street to answer a call about somebody breaking in. This was just before 4 00 in the morning. They detained one person, recovering a gun. A swat team determined that nobody else was inside the building. Oakland police told us that building contained an unpermitted cannabis growing operation. Abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area. And one of the issues were looking at is safety. There was a 7 increase in Violent Crime in oakland in 2019 from the year before. And a spike in property crimes like car breakins and stolen lap tops. Anser hassan tells us what the city is doing to make the streets safer. It is indeed always a disappointment when you see any increase in crime. Oakland police chief Ann Kirkpatrick says 2019 was a tough year for her department. There were 400 more Violent Crimes, up 7 from 2018. And seven more homicides, some of which can be blamed on an increase in gang violence. We do know that we had some homicides that were related to gangs that we do not typically see become active in conflict. Like other cities, there was also a spike in car breakins and stolen laptops. This year, oakland is forming a task force with alameda, berkeley, emeryville, piedmont, and san leandro to tackle the issue. We will each be giving two officers per month to come together and to work in each others jurisdictions with a focus on those autobergs. Its not possible to arrest our way out of this problem. For tomorrow night into early wednesday morning, we can expect some light rain or showers, less than 0. 2 in most locations. By 7 00 in the evening, well see showers sweeping across much of the north bay.
