Professor, thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. I read about your lab. You have been doing fascinating work. In the battle against covid19. From making face shielding to developing new disinfecting systems is that right . Exactly right. We have been doing a lot of work trying to harness the ability of uv light to kill bacteria and virus and create systems that can be in hospitals. I know you really both know a lot about the different types of uv light and clarify any misconceptions in the public. The president speculated on the use of two things. Disinfectant and uv light. Possibly hitting the body with it. Thats led to questions. When most of us here uv light we think of the rays from the sun that we try to block. Do you think thats what the president was talking about . No. So theres uv light which is a broad category. And within that theres uva and b. Which makes it through the atmosphere and the o zone. Thats what you think of in skin cancer and sun block prevents. Theres uvc. Its higher energy. Its heading towards the xray range. And uvc is effective at killing viruss and bacteria. Can destroy the Building Blocks of both materials by monkey wrenching the dna. Its very good as a disinfecting method. In a distinct way. Uva and uvb operate. Why dont we seem to know much about uvc . Is it because it gets blocked out by the o zone and we dont think about it . Exactly. The zone acts as a protecting shield around the earth. To keep uvc from making it down to the earth surface and hitting us. But, likeany wavelengthof light you can create a lightbulb that will admit it and having it. Were able to harness the energy to clean surfaces. Water and air. If that was what the president was referring to, as you just said its not really a new idea for yoousing it to kill bacteria and viruss. Can you talk about household things that we might have that use uvc light . Its actually used a lot to clean water supply. Most of the water supply in the u. S. Is cleaned with uvc. Its a very effective way of purifying water without using chemicals. Which is beneficial for humans. And used to clean up air. Remove pollution. And both of those situations you can imagine that one of the great advantages is the human beings doesnt need to interact directly with the light source. A new emerging application is in the healthcare industry. Even though uvc has kind of hypnotized everyone. As a way of preventing covid19 transmission. Its a new application of uvc as a light source. All right. So if it can effectively kill a virus and quickly, what is the potential harm to humans, because a lot of scientists got alarmed when they heard about uvc use it to kill the virus. And theres a fear that the average person will try to if you will use it on themselves. Whats the potential impact on our skin and ourselves. Health impact . I can understand how that idea of well if it works on cleaning surfaces, it would seem to translate. It might work really well to clean a person. We are just a giant surface. However you have to remember how it works. It goes in and destroys the dna. Our cells are built by dna. If it destroys the dna of bacteria it can destroy us. The highest probability one being skin cancer. It can do a lot of damage to our eyes. And it can actually result in blindness. Using uvc as a way to clean our skin is incredibly dangerous. One of the initial regulations when all of the Water Treatment and air treatment techniques develop, one of the initial regulations that came out from the fda was directly related to exposure and protection. For people. Its incredibly important not to expose yourself to uvc. We can only speculate if this was the source of what President Trump was commenting on yesterday. There is a study that came out from a Different University this week that talked about how the uvc could be a game changer. And that can be put in very Public Places that is safe for everyone. Is that well studied . So, i wont speak to that specific experiment. But the idea of using uvc to clean public spaces is kind of an emerging idea. Its really can could be enabled with a Technology Like or Autonomous Robotics if they were made very intelligent. If they could tell when people were or were not present. Not p. In the applications the key metric to deploy these systems would be the technology or the intelligence to detect the presence of a person or not. Thats really kind of one of the key bars we need to cross. Is the ability to do that mated detection automated detection. We like to bring in viewer comments. So heres one that ill post to you. She wants to know if this is the same uv light in the machine that nail teches use for setting gel nails in the nail salon. Thats usually uva or b. Not c. That type of material is uv curable material. There are a few by the way. Uva and b rays kill viruss and bacteria. But are they much slower at it . Yes. Like whats the difference . The mechanism uva and b kill viruss and bacteria using a different mechanism. Theres three basic strategies. The first is chemical. Thats the bleach. The second is thermal. Heating. Put something in the oven and heat it. You kill everything. And the third is radiation. This is where uvc comes in. Youre radiating. A and b heat. So its a thermal treatment. It seem its a totally different method. It takes a long time. You need hours of exposure. Not minutes. Got it. Its very slow. A question, have any scientists used uvc on covid19. Excellent question. To me knowledge, no one has directly tested uvc with covid19. However the epa has established model organisms. Model bacteria that they established its if your source is able to successfully kill these bacteria. It should work on these viruss and viruss of this time. Its also been used on h 1 n 1 which was a similar virus. Thats been shown to work with other types of organisms. Therefore it should work on covid19. But a definite expeerpt hasnt been done. Well take a short break on air. But this conversation does [female vo] restaurants are facing a crisis. And theyre counting on your takeout and delivery orders to make it through. Grubhub. Together we can help save the restaurants we love. Were back with the professor of Chemical Engineering and material science. Professor, thanks for continuing our chat. Earlier you told us about the impact and of uvc as a disinfect tant. I want to ask about your work. You created a box using materials from Hardware Stores to disinfect hospitals and medical facilities. I want to be clear, while my team helped make it. I worked with a local Small Business in l. A. Engineering. These are no way to research right now and current work from home conditions. And so it was only really with this teaming of universities and industry coming together that youre able to come up with ideas and execute those ideas. This specific system it combines plastic bins. 18 gallon plastic bin that we coat on the inside with chrome spray paint. Which is truly the fantasy of teenagers everywhere. And then a uvc lightbulb. We actually they standard type of bulb that you would find in a medical setting. And we power it. Its a very slimpl simple design. Lightweight. We optimized it. We asked providers what they needed. Many people in the United States are working on making masks and face shields and they the Healthcare Providers said they needed more uvc cleaning systems. To create this ppe or personal protective equipment ecosystem. And use a face shield and put it in place to clean it and reuse it again. That was why that became the driver. To contribute to creating this ecosystem of safety for the healthcare workers. Please. In the future theres a critical need in the u. S. Because these are inexpensive and easy to make and lightweight. In the future you can imagine using them in low Resource Environments and you may not necessarily have access to chemical disinfectant. But this is not something youre suggesting folks build at home. No. This is not something im suggesting people build at home. And have in your this is something you have an application in healthcare setting where they are trained. Who are familiar with the technology. And who understand the risk of being exposed to uvc. Its not something at home. Given that im not sure i want to ask this question. But i will. He asked where can we purchase this type of machine. Were not talking about this level. Maybe hes talking about the disinfectants for your phone or things like that. This specific system isnt for sale. Thats an easy question. There are a will the of consumer systems. So there are Many Companies that are making cell phone systems. I dont want to advertise. But there are Many Companies making systems that are optimized for cleaning cell phones or credit cards. And there are a couple companies slightly larger boxes for a tablet. Those are optimized for home use. And another category making wands. And amazon. You can buy directly from manufacturer. Google in order to find. I want to touch on the disinfectants that people interpreted President Trump statement as when he said disinfect. People thought color ox or lie sol. We dont know. The idea of that being or injected. Companies said dont do that. Talk about how those products kill viruss and what the impact on a human would be. So, uvc kills by essentially killing the dna and rna. Internal to a virus. If yo think of the Cartoon Version of a virus, theres the shell. Which is the cap. Surface which the are the red pink things coming off. And then theres also the the inside. So one way to kill a virus is to break up the cap sid. The protective shield. Anything to poke holes in that shell will kill the virus. Thats where or soap. You can break the shell and kill the virus. A friend of mine wants to know the products say they kill 99 of germs and virus. Is there medical evidence that covid of those . Yeah. So first if you ever find a scientist thats willing to Say Something is 100 effective. I want to meet that scientist. I have never found any scientists who will say but it has been shown that soap and bleach and clo rox are effective on covid19. Now the degree of its always related to the user. So that 99. 99 is related to how effective are you at cleaning a surface . Im sure you have seep the videos of the heres how to wash your hands. Its important with soap and water to wash correctly. Its not putting your hands under water and you kill 99 . Its a matter of application. All right. Doctor, thank you so much for sharing your rej asearch and in. I want to caution folks what were doing here is exploring Science Behind uvc light as a potential disinfectant. Something that can potentially kill viruss and bacteria. Its impact on covid19 is study and this is not a political discussion. But a look at the science. Thank you for having me. Thank you for joining us. All right. When we come back we talk about the future of colleges and the future of colleges and universities and the how about poor fred wilson . What a shame. So soon after retiring. I hear his wife needed help with the funeral expenses. Thats ridiculous he had social security. When my brother died, his wife received a check from social security, all right for 255 the funeral costs were well over 8,000. How on earth did she pay for it . Were back. Were bringing you more content. We have the new platform at 3 00 every day. We get more from our special correspondent. Part of the Coronavirus Team of experts every day hes going to talk to you in a segment were calling doctors note. College and universities play a vital role in the society. And they are crowded. I loved college. Lets talk about how to safely resume back to campus. First, in order to even begin talking about these next phases in reopening, we have to see a reduction in all coronavirus cases for at least 14 days. Hospitals have to be at a safe place to take on new potential cases. We have to have the ability to widespread test and be able to quickly and efficiently contact trace. Then, once students are allowed back on campus, physical distancing. Strict hygiene measures ask cleaning shared surfaces will need to be daily practices. There maybe some changes to class schedule. Like staggering. A combination of in person and online. And possibly changes to Student Housing. This is going to be an individualized approach depending on campus resources, geography. Student population. Some faculty and Staff Members and students risk due to age or preexisting conditions. There has to be specific plans in place for them as well. Contact tracing has to be a huge priority. If any College Students get sick everyone they have been in contact with will need medical guidance and may need to be quarantined. Think about how many people a college with coronavirus could expose. From classes to Student Housing to shared study space. To college town sinesses. Theres a reon we see out breaks before we get to local headlines. Ten residents apt the assisted living facility in redwood city passed a way. As a result of the novel coronavirus. The facility tells us 20 residents tested positive for covid19. And ten have passed away. Several Staff Members have tested positive. San Francisco Mayor addressed the shelter in place in the Daily Briefing saying the shelter in place order could be around for a while. The reality is and people are asking about this, will the Public Health order get extended. The likelihood that will happen is very likely. And what that means is another few weeks or you all to comply and remain at home. To continue to follow this social distancing order that we put forth. A a Major Construction project along highway 101 in San Francisco began over night. July. 1 projectas to ar but according to along the highway is down 40 to 60 . Because of the shelter in place. So, this project actually was pushed up. They figure now is it time to do it. Affecting fewer people. All northbound lanes are closed. There will be a detour along i 280. Traffic is expected in both directions. Crews are replacing the deck on the roadway. The section is 70 years old and in need of replacement. Its expected to be finished in ten days. Now i want to look at the latest numbers in the u. S. In terms of cases of coronavirus. From johnson hopkins. 889,000 confirmed cases. With 50,000 deaths in the u. S. There have been 4. 6 million tests administered in the u. S. But many experts say that scratches the surface and many more tests need to be done in the future. Before we go, the news at 4 00 will be on tonight, the coronavirus death toll in the u. S. Tops 50,000. On the same day several states gamble on their reopening. Georgia, south carolina, and texas among the states opening for business. Customers in masks filling into salons, barbershops and gyms. The new abc news poll showing overwhelming support for social distancing as stayathome orders nationwide, 86 . New yorks Governor Andrew Cuomo reporting 422 deaths in 24 hours. The states curve still going down. But the governor warning, its not over. Tonight, a mother and father who both have to virus reunited with their newborn twins who were born prematur
