This is a tale of two states. Northern california and Southern California. Here are the rankings. The top five counties with the highest number covid19 cases all in Southern California. Los angeles, riverside, san diego, orange county, san bernardino. Thats 71 of all of californias covid19 cases. Meanwhile the bay area counties make up just 11 . So how do you explain the divide . Its hard to say why. Some of this is luck but i think we have to assume it has mostly to do with behavioral differences. In orange county, the Public Health officer was criticized so badly for enforcing mandatory masks, she ended up quitting. In the bay area there happen been any major outcry against mandatory masks. I dont think were in any danger. We need to keep a close eye on it. If we have to, shut it down a bit. Here are a couple major differences. L. A. Countys is 10 million. There are some differences, too, when it comes to Outdoor Recreation culture. So cal beaches with the hotter temperatures made headlines as early as i am a for drawing early crowds. Bay area beaches have been crowded, too. Some had to shut down though San Francisco was praised for installing social distancing circles in public parks. The bay area people took it seriously and continue to take it seriously. I believe people in Southern California are doing the same but i think people are doing less than they should. They said rising numbers could be due to more testing and hospitalization rates are stable. What would you say to your peers and colleagues there as we hold our numbers . I would say, to people in Southern California, lets continue to be vigilant. If things are going in the wrong direction, we have to redouble our efforts. To northern california, the minute we star thinking, look how good we are, we start getting complacent and smug about it. Thats the minute we start getting more dangerous. The other metric is the number cases in hospitals. Last county has more than 1,500. As a point of comparison, Santa Clara County has 47. Really interesting to see these breakdowns. How much did the increase in cases have to do with an increase in testing . Well, he made it very clear that testing rates dont really tell whole story of the surge. In many counties, he added the number of cases are going up faster than the number of people getting tested. Thanks. Chris reyes reporting. Santa clara county is seeing its number of coronavirus cases rise. Today the county record one of the largest increases in a while. During a county board of supervisors meeting, they said this morning about the uptick. Weve said before that covid19 is like a wildfire. The California Department of Public Health issued a striking warning saying, unless we want to see more suffering and go through another round of closures, i think critical to wear a Face Covering when you leave the house.
