Anthony fauci tells abc news that some of the messages the Trump Administration has relayed to the public did not always match the reports he was getting from people on the front lines about struggles like shortages of protective equipment. We keep hearing when we go to these Task Force Meetings that these are being corrected, that its being corrected, but yet when you go into the trenches you still hear about that. I really, quite frankly, have to be honest with you, i cannot explain that. Reporter overnight new hope in the race for a vaccine. Reporter like moderna, pfizers vaccine likely wont be available until early next year. Once pfizer gives the green light Clinical Labs like amr miami will be looking for volunteers. Michael. All right, thank you so much, victor. George. We go to the white house where President Trump sent out a series of tweets overnight promoting hydroxychloroquine, attacking dr. Anthony fauci after calling on some governors to reopen faster. Our senior White House Correspondent cecilia vega joins us now. Cecilia, this also comes after his National Security adviser has tested positive for covid. Reporter yeah, george, good morning to you. This one hits close to home for the president. Robert obrien is the highest Ranking Administration Official known to have tested positive and it brings the number of people in the white house or in the campaign to have tested positive to more than a dozen. This morning, the white house wont say when the president last came facetoface with his National Security adviser. I havent seen him lately. I heard he tested, yeah. I have not seen him. Im calling him later. Reporter Robert Obrien last seen at the white house grounds on thursday, now the white house will only say hes experiencing mild symptoms and that there is no risk of exposure to President Trump who is regularly tested. Reporter but in that same visit he also called on states to reopen even as cases surge. I really do believe a lot of the governors should be opening up states that theyre not opening, and well see what happens with them. Reporter overnight the president went on a twitter spree. Among the things he shared with his more than 84 million twitter followers a doctor saying you dont need to wear masks. She touted hydroxychloroquine instead. That video has since been removed and flagged by twitter as a violation and he also shared a tweet that called dr. Anthony fauci a fraud and another claiming fauci misled the American People on what the president said were many issues, george. Okay, cecilia, thanks. We are joined by dr. Anthony fauci. Thank you for joining us this morning. I got to say this is not the way i expected to start the interview but i have to have you respond to those tweets from President Trump that were taken down overnight. First on that one that said you dont need masks, there is a cure, its called hydroxychloroquine, can you just clarify for our viewers the best scientific guidance we have on masks and hydroxychloroquine . We should all be Wearing Masks outside, george. This is something that you heard dr. Birx mention when she was making a comment. Its very important. There are certain fundamental things we should be doing, particularly if you happen to be in an area where theres viral activity. Wear masks all the time when youre outside. Social distancing, six feet at least. Avoid crowds. Close bars in areas where theres viral activity and do hand hygiene. Theres no question about that so thats something thats not really arguable. How about hydroxychloroquine, the president promoting effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine. We know the fda has recommended against emergency use. Right. Right, exactly, and i go along with the fda. The overwhelming prevailing Clinical Trials that have looked at the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine have indicated that it is not effective in coronavirus disease. And one of the retweets from the president also accuses you of misleading the public on many issues. Youve been at the nih since 1984. Youve advised six president s. Can you continue to do your job when the president of the United States is publicly questioning your credibility in this way . You know, george, i dont know how to address that. Im just going to certainly continue doing my job. You know, i dont tweet. I dont even read them so i dont really want to go there. I just will continue to do my job no matter what comes out because i think its very important. Were in the middle of a crisis with regard to an epidemic, a pandemic. This is what i do. This is what ive been trained for and ill continue to do it. To the charge youve been misleading the American Public . I have not been misleading the American Public under any circumstances. Lets talk about reopening right now. Which states are you most concerned about . You know, i mean, obviously the Southern States that really actually had a major surge, florida, texas, arizona, california. They appear, i hope and it looks like they may be cresting in coming back down. What im concerned about is what dr. Birx mentioned just a little bit ago is that some of the other states, the ohios, the indianas, the tennessees, the kentuckys that are starting to have that very early indication that the percent of cases regarding the number of tests that you have, that its going up. That can a surefire sign youve got to really be careful and youve got to if you are trying to open up, please do it in a way thats in accordance with the guidelines, the guidelines that we carefully put together sometime ago. If you do that carefully and you do the fundamentals that i mentioned just a moment ago, george, i think we can prevent the surges that weve seen in the Southern States because we just cant afford yet again another surge. Yet as you know the governor of tennessee simply said hes not prepared to go along with what dr. Birx said and at the same time President Trump yesterday is saying some states should be thinking about reopening. Do we need a coordinated national strategy, all going in the same direction . You know, george, if you look at the guidelines, the way we put them out some time ago, that really is the national strategy. This was the recommendation that was made saying heres what you need to do. If youre at this level, you wait until you have a period of time over 14 days where it comes down. Then you graduate to the next phase. We there, u t the nexttied some states are not doing that. We would hope they all rethink what happens when you dont adhere to that. Weve seen it in plain sight in the Southern States that surge. So weve got to get back to a very prudent advance from one stage to another. Lets talk about sports. Weve seen that outbreak in the Miami Marlins. Can the baseball season continue . You know, i dont know. I hope so, george, because i know that major League Baseball, the players, the owners, the managers have put a lot of effort into getting together and puttinprocole fe would work. Its very unfortunate what happened with the miami dolphins. Its just first of all, im concerned. I hope the players are all right. I heard about a dozen of them have gotten infected. Even though theyre young, vigorous and very healthy i hope theyre okay but you just interest to watch this. This could put it in danger. I dont believe they need to stop but we need to follow this and see what happens with other teams on a daybyday basis. I know you meant the marlins. You said the dolphins. That does take me to my next question. I meant the im sorry. Im sorry. Sorry. Sorry, george. I totally get that. But i do want to ask about football because as we look forward to the football season, the preseason has been canceled. Is football going to have to do what the nba is doing if theyre going to have a season . Will they have to be in a bubble . You know, they might. Again, george, i hate to make determinations on that because there are people who are involved with the teams who are putting a lot of work and a lot of consideration in. It might be that they have to go in a bubble but i think theyre conscientious enough and want to protect their players and the personnel that they will do the right thing. Finally, let me ask you about vaccines. We saw that moderna trial begin yesterday. I know you say youre cautiously optimistic. What should people expect . You know, george, when i say im cautiously optimistic, i mean that. The reason i say that is that the phase 3 trial, as you know, started yesterday. The early data on phase 1 which was fundamentally safety but enough for us to see the kind of response that this vaccine induces in individuals and it induced a level of antibodies which are the proteins that fight the virus at a level that was quite high in the sense of it was comparable, if not better, than what we see in the recovery from natural infection. And thats really one of the issues when youre dealing with vaccines. If you can induce a response that is at least as good as natural infection, that is a good predictor that youre going to have a vaccine that works. Obviously the proof of the pudding is youve got to do the trial. Its a large trial. 30,000 people are going to be in the trial. That will give us the answer, and, yes, i am cautiously optimistic as we get into the late fall and early winter we will have an answer and i believe it will be positive. Dr. Fauci, thanks for your time this morning. Thank you, george. Thank you for having me. Well have much more on the covid crisis and an inside look at what went wrong as the nations top scientists look back at the beginning of the year coming up in our next hour. Robin. The gop looking to decrease unemployment benefits, and time is running out on reaching a deal. Mary bruce is on capitol hill with more. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, robin. Well, the negotiations began here in earnest overnight and they are not off to a great start. Emerging from a twohour meeting with the treasury secretary and the white house chief of staff, House Speaker nancy pelosi declared the republicans are not ready to seriously negotiate. Look, the two sides are far apart here on many of these issues, but the key Sticking Point here is really those unemployment benefits. Democrats want to continue these weekly 600 checks that have been helping more than 30 million americans who are unemployed stay afloat right now while republicans say that those payments are simply too high, that they discourage americans from getting back to work. They want to slash those checks down to 200 and implement a new system that would cap these payments at 70 of a workers previous wages. Bottom line, these benefits are expiring now and it is likely to take weeks for the two sides here to reach a final deal while these benefits for millions of americans are going to be hanging in the balance, michael. A lot of lives depending on it. Thank you so much. Take a look at this heroic rescue caught on camera. An unconscious driver in new jersey saved by good samaritans. Its the inside story of how we lost control of the coronavirus outbreak featuring interviews with dr. Anthony fauci, the head of the cdc, dr. Robert redfield, and other Public Health officials. In this clip, the nations top scientists reflect on what went wrong with testing and take us back to the moment they first learned of covid19. They say close to 1. 5 Million People are gathered here tonight. Im pretty easy lowkey person. So i was at home with my wife and a couple friends. Welcome another new year together. It was the first time in a long time that i had an opportunity to get my whole family back together. Three, two, one happy new year i did get a phone call from my colleagues at cdc that there was a mysterious new pneumonia. Chinese Health Authorities are still working to identify the virus behind a pneumonia outbreak in the central city of wuhan. Both of us agreed that this looks, smells and almost certainly is a new coronavirus. And the question is, what are we going to do about it . It is the perfect storm and my worst nightmare. When there is a new pathogen like this, the cdc sets out to develop a test. Thats routinely what we do and we do it very well, which they did and did it in record time, seven to ten days. They immediately came across a problem. One of the components of the test was essentially invalidating the results. And so the cdc then had to send out a second batch of test kits, which also had a problem and as the weeks ticked by, we were running out of time to contain the spread of this virus and we knew it. It took us about close to four to five weeks to figure out the contamination and within five weeks, we got the test to the Health Departments throughout the nation which i would still say is pretty record time. Let me be very clear, in an outbreak scenario, every day matters. Every hour matters. So losing months meant that our chances to contain this virus were gone. This was pretty much the most critical time in the outbreak for us to be flying blind. And the virus was seeding america and sadly lives were lost. Cdc doesnt develop tests for all of clinical medicine. I do think the private sector wasnt quite all in in developing a coronavirus test back in january and february. But i think in retrospect if it had been stimulated more, it would have been a great benefit. I dont think cdc will manufacture tests in the future. I think what well do is contract a manufacturer to manufacture the test. The testing facility outside Hard Rock Stadium just opened up. It stretches nearly two miles long. There was an infinite demand for tests right now. I think if you asked 100 million americans if they wanted a test theyd say i want a test right now. The reality is we went from zero, well probably do 25 to 30 million over the next 30 days, but im not satisfied and we should all not be satisfied because we still have a long way to go. We have no tolerance for the illegal and Reckless Endangerment of Public Health. In florida, this gym owner was arrested after repeatedly violating county Health Orders arguing his guests cant be forced to wear a mask. Earlier this morning, george spoke to dr. Anthony fauci about the need for masks. I got to say this is not the way i expected to start the interview but i have to have you respond to those tweets from President Trump that were taken down overnight. First, on that one that said you dont need masks, there is a cure. Its called hydroxychloroquine. Can you just clarify for our viewers the best scientific guidance we have on masks and hydroxychloroquine . We should all be Wearing Masks outside, george. This is something that as you heard dr. Birx mention when she was making a comment, its very important. There are certain fundamental things we should be doing, particularly if you happen to be in an area where theres viral activity. Wear masks all the time when youre outside. Social distancing. Six feet at least. D crowds. Close bars in areas where theres viral activity and do hand hygiene. Theres no question about that. So thats something thats not really arguable. Can you continue to do your job when the president of the United States is publicly questioning your credibility in this way . You know, george, i dont know how to address that. Im just going to certainly continue doing my job. You know, i dont tweet. I dont i dont even read them so i dont want to go there. I just will continue to do my job no matter what comes out because i think its very important. Were in the middle of a crisis with regard to an epidemic, a pandemic. This is what i do. This is what ive been trained for my entire professional life and ill continue to do it. Finally let me ask you about vaccines. We saw that moderna trial begin. I know youre cautiously optimistic. What should people expect . You know, george, when i say im cautiously optimistic, i mean that the reason i say that is that the phase 3 trial as you know started yesterday. The early data on phase 1 which was fundamentally safety but it was enough for us to see the kind of response that this vaccine induces in individuals and it induced a level of antibodies which are the proteins that fight the virus at a level that was quite high in the sense of it was comparable if not better than what we see in the recovery from natural infection. And thats really one of the issues when youre dealing with vaccines. If you can induce a response that is at least as good as natural infection, that is a good predictor that youre going to have a vaccine that works. Oft obviously the proof of the pudding is youve got to do the trial. Its a large trial, 30,000 people are going to be in the trial. That will give us the answer and, yes, i am cautiously optimistic that as we get into the late fall and early winter we will have an answer and i believe it will be positive. Reporter and like moderna, pfizers vaccine likely wont be available until early next year but once pfizer gives the green light labs like amr miami will be looking for volunteers. Michael . Thank you so much. Victor. Big news for one of the biggest shopping days of the year, target and Dicks Sporting Goods now joining walmart closing their doors on thanksgiving. Bernards are historically known for making heroic rescues, but sometimes they need help too. You guys, meet daisy. She is a rescue st. Bernard weighing 128 pounds. She was on a hike with her owners on englands highest peak over the weekend when suddenly refused to move any further. And she appeared to have some pain in her hind legs. Her humans called for help and kept her hydrated while they waited and you can see from these images this was no small effort. It took 16 rescuers a sturdy stretcher, careful navigation over a rocky river, but five hours later daisy was safe and sound. Thankfully the rescue team says they brought plenty of treats that came very much in handy during the 3,000foot descent. Were told daisy is resting and going to be just fine. A little happy ending there and some really remarkable video. And on that guys, i will send it back to the studio. Just in time. Thank you so much, lara. Well now to our gma cover story and the man we call the morning maestro, of course, talking about Regis Philbin. Weve seen him more than anyone else on television and tonight a 20 20 special walking through the journey of his incredible life in his own words and the people closest to him in an abc news exclusive. I spoke with one of those dear friends, kelly ripa. Reporter Regis Philbin was one of a kind. Known for his warmth, his wit, his charm and his endless engy and devo dselling katie couric that would be his legacy. I hope to be remembered most for . 17,000 hours in front of a television camera. Is that enough for you . Reporter several hundred of those hours with his last cohost kelly ripa. What went through your mind when you heard the news . It was this moment and my daughter sort of crystallized it for me. Lola said, thats got to be a mistake. That cant be right and there was a moment where i had this incredible hope that it was somehow misreported. When the news finally settled in, who did you think of first . I thought of joanna and j. J. , his daughters, and, of course, joy, who he worshipped. Joy was everything to regis. Absolutely everything. And then my thought went to kathie lee. Forget it all but please recall i love you i think my biggest takeaway from the 11 years that i shared with him was that you have to be yourself. You cannot be one person on camera and a different person once the light goes off or the audience is gone. You have to be who you are. I watched today this amazing footage of regis babysitting your kids. When you watch that footage back, what goes through your mind . I got particularly emotional when we saw those clips. There was a moment where regis is brushing lolas teeth and shes staring at him and he says to her youre i think he said youre a genteel little lady. Youre a genteel little woman. You understand . Okay, thats good. Honey, thats good. Just the way he spoke to her in this very sweet way. He made it all seem so effortless. What was his talent . His talent was being himself completely and making everybody else the star of the show. I think his love of people will also be his legacy. You can see our special, Regis Philbin the morning maestro tonight at 8 00 p. M. On abc. You will hear from his cohosts over the years and see rare behindthescenes footage and hear from regis in his own words. And, robin, i love kelly said he was exactly the same person off camera that he was on camera. He did appear to be that way. We cannot wait for the special tonight. Thank you so much, amy. Always doing such a great job there in the studio. But we want to turn to those who work from home. The worries that we have. Google Just Announced that its employees will be working remotely until next year. Okay, there are some perks, like im not missing not putting on my sixinch heels. But does working remotely cut into productivity . Its a story that we first saw in the wall street journal and our chief Business Correspondent Rebecca Jarvis who worked from home for a time joins us now with that story. Good morning, rebecca. Reporter good morning, robin. I miss seeing you in those sixinch heels. But a lot of us can relate to this idea that we feel so very fortunate for the work from home flexibility. I love to be able to see my daughter and my husband. But as google is now saying that its more than 200,000 employees can work from home through nexts lyjurk this remote bandwagon, some are beginning to question whether its really all its cracked up to be. For roya, starting a new job at a nonprofit during a Global Pandemic while working remotely is at times a struggle. Building any sort of relationship with my coworkers is kind of difficult right now. Ive never seen any of them in person. I dont even know where our Office Building is. Reporter with Major Tech Companies switching their workforce to fulltime remote employees leading some to wonder whether work from home is actually working. For the first several months i think we all lived all the adrenaline adrenaline of that. That adrenaline doesnt last forever. Reporter the ceo of humu says while working from home started with great intentions, even making managers more accessible, its also led to less accountable. One of the common ways were bumping into companies now is theyre coming to us saying we cant get people to showp lsici reporter in fact many employees are struggling with the lack of social contact, integrating new concepts and training new hires. According to the Becker Friedman institute at the university of chicago, 37 of jobs in the u. S. Can be performed entirely at home. While there are clearly benefits it appears to be coming at a cost. All those little tiny moments that happened in the office where we bump into each other are badly missed because theyre essential. Reporter a recent survey by flex jobs showing 40 of workers say they have experienced burnout during the pandemic. But flex jobs ceo sara sutton, a Remote Workforce guru, says this is circumstantial. Remote work really hasnt been adapted into most Companies Culture yet and we need to regroup and rethink and think about the longer term scenario. Reporter so how do you make working from home work for you . If thats what your company wants, first of all, create a routine. It can be a 9 to 5. It can be what works for you and your family. Make sure you get outside and finally, robin, communicate. Those little moments that are missing from our office interactions, while theyre not necessarily going to be recreated through email exchanges and phone calls, if you reach out to people and you make a point to keep those connections, it will help you with your work and your mentality going forward. Robin . Oh, rebecca, boy, thank you so much. You know, im here in my basement. Been here since march and its like it was said in the piece, in the beginning there was an adrenaline. Then you realize youve been here again and again and again and you miss the connection. Im glad you had time with that precious daughter and husband, that you had that opportunity. We have to look at that and see, those are moments that we cant get back, right . Reporter yeah, absolutely. And im so grateful and i feel so fortunate that abc news has allowed for this to work for all of us and im also so grateful for these moments with you, robin, to be able to chat and say hi. I know. I know. And we cant say enough about our technicians. Im telling you, the people who have kept us on the air in our basement, its been terrific. But its good to see you. Good to see you, rebecca. We have been through it once already in our household and lets be honest, it can stink. Enter the mom psychologist dr. Jazmine coaching her 110,000 instagram followers through the trials, the tribulations and tantrums and now shes literally written the book on how to ditch the diapers for good. For some parents theres nothing scarier than this messy milestone. Potty training. But have no fear, dr. Jazmine mccoy, also known as the mom psychologist on instagram, has secrets to success in her new book the firsttime parents guide to potty training. I interweave my knowledge as a clinical psychologist but also my practical experience as a mom myself to help moms learn the tools that they need, become positive parents, but also to feel less alone in this journey. Reporter she says one of the most common questions parents ask is what age they should start the potty process. Here in the u. S. , were seeing most parents start this process at around 27 months, but instead of focusing on age, i recommend that you focus on paying attention to the subtle developmental cues of readiness. Being able to follow really simple directions, having the ability to understand that certain items go in certain places, showing interest in the potty. Reporter after some initial success, Danielle Duckworth says her 26monthold son barrett had some recent setbacks. Lets go potty. No. He did well through the first week. Then the weekend came and he just doesnt want to have anything to do with the potty now. Its really good to hear that you had so much success in the early couple weeks of potty training. That says that he is ready. Reporter to get barrett back on track, dr. Jazmine recommends going back to the basics, loading up on liquids and prompting him to use the potty every 30 to 60 minutes. You can use a timer to have a visual cue for him and you as well. That way its time to sit on the potty. Gradsly work towards less prompting. Reporter she also suggests using potty training childrens books and videos to help master the skill. Role play with figurines or stuffed animals or dolls, different potty scenarios and mimic the scenarios going on at home. Reporter treats as rewards can be controversial but dr. Jazmine says they can be a great tool as long as theyre small. After they have shown consistent signs of mastery, youre going to gradually taper down the rewards. Reporter after a couple days of putting tips to the test bye. What do we get for peepee on the potty . You get a treat . We are super excited to keep following her tips and were on ep lto potty training barrett. Dr. Jazmine also says children like to feel in control of this process and that can be as simple as letting them choose a toy or book to bring with them. Yes, there are potty props and you can let them pick out their underwear. She also is more than just an expert on potty training. She teaches about parental exhaustion, teaches how to have kids share and other important life skills as well but rest assured i am buying that book, amy. Im sure youll do just fine. With two teenagers, i know eventually they learn. Thats the big takeaway. Eventually everybody learns, right . Thank you very much. You can visit our website for more tips from dr. Jazmine, and were going to head back over to rob now who is in texas. Hey, good morning again, amy. I dont have to tell you its been sweltering across parts of the northeast. D. C. Her passion started at 10 when her father was diagnosed with ns turning her passion into a business and influencing others to make an impact in society. For us to propel the future in a positive direction, it takes intergenerational support and truly listening to and validating uprising voices. Reporter she has over 100,000 followers and a cookbook filled with both a love for food and helping others. So impressive. Hailes new cookbook is called living lively, and she is joining us from her home to talk all about it. Haile, thanks for joining us this morning. Youre getting a lot of attention, and michelle obama, former first lady, called you an example for your generation. Youve met her a few times, so im curious, how has she inspired you . Well, i mean its been such an honor to have such positive experiences and the support of the former first lady and getting to sit in her box at the state of the union and introduce her at the kids state dinner a few years back was surreal. Im so grateful for the way she uplifts young people but im also just incredibly grateful for all the community leaders, for family in my life, shining examples of amazing people who are committed to community service. Youre setting a great example as well. Congratulations on the cookbook. It is full of plantbased recipes. One is a called a Smoothie Bowl. Tell us about that. Its a creamier, richer take on a smoothie, and today i have a pb and j Smoothie Bowl from my cookbook, which puts a twist on the classic Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich. We all love that, but for summertime its great to have something lighter so this is filled with lots of berries like strawberries, raspberries and bananas and then we add in flaxseeds which are super high in dietary fiber and omega3s and then go crazy with the toppings which is exactly what ill do here. Ill add fresh strawberries, raspberries here, and you can do it however youd like. Usually my Smoothie Bowl, i have way too many toppings but i kind of feel like maybe thats not a rule. You can never have too many toppings in our Smoothie Bowl. Im adding peanuts for crunch and granola and then you can add almond butter, Peanut Butter, whatever you like. That is a great summertime treat. Youre also putting a twist on mac and cheese . Yes, so growing up, i mean, i think everyone kind of has a soft spot if their hearts for mac and cheese but since going vegan, you know, for the environment, my health and animals i really wanted to find a way to tap into the rich cheesiness so in my Straight Fire mac and cheese there is a combination of carrots, cashews and beans as well as Nutritional Yeast which really adds this richness. Blend the ingredients together and stir it in with whatever type of macaroni you like. I love topping it with some fresh scallions or chives and it just adds a nice pop but honestly im always in the mood for mac and cheese no matter the season. Well, you hit the jackpot with healthy mac and cheese, ill tell you that. Youve been inspiring so many young people with your message of wellness and compassion. We have two young people who want to ask you a few questions and the first one is autumn, she is a girl scout from ohio. Heres the question. Hi, haile. Goal setting is extremely important. It gives us something to look towards for the future. As a senior girl scout i have a goal to become a pediatric surgeon. When a goal does not go as planned what motivated you to keep going and not give up on your dream . Hey, autumn, thats amazing first of all. But for me what really keeps me motivated when things dont go as planned, i know a lot of us are experiencing that right now, is really tapping into my intention or the why behind everything that i do. So being motivated and fueled by that actually allows me to still feel fulfilled and know that im working towards my goal in a way thats aligned with what i want to do. So it kind of opens up my mind to find Creative Solutions to work around challenges and i hope that really helps, just simmer in your why. It sure will. You have a question from sabine, a girl scout from california. During this already stressful time we had the added stress of the pandemic and the unknown. In your personal, professional opinion, what should we do to keep mentally and physically healthy during this time . Well, i think the biggest thing that we can do to stay mentally and physically well during this time is absolutely engaging in selfcare and that can look like so many Different Things which i mention in my book, is that selfcare is not only, you know, face masks and bubble baths but also tapping into the things you love, committing to community service, getting to have alone time to reflect and dive into really who you are and what you want to be and so really taking care of yourself is not selfish at all and actually fuels our ability to have the energy and vitality to commit to those in our communities who may need help so definitely dive into selfcare and youll feel a lot more balanced and ready to take on whatever comes your way. Lots of good advice there, haile. Thank you so much for joining us. I want all of you at home to get hailes recipes at goodmorningamerica. Com.
