Love to hear it and we do say good morning, america, and its great to be with you on this historic wednesday morning. Joe biden announcing that groundbreaking choice, tapping his former rival, senator Kamala Harris, to be his running mate and in a sign of the times, amy and t. J. , notified the senator on a zoom call as you can imagine. Right now harris is the only sitting female black senator, and now she will become the first woman of color ever nominated for Vice President by a major party. Harris is only the third woman to accomplish this feat. We are going to speak with senator Amy Klobuchar in just a few moments about this historic decision but first lets go to mary bruce with more details from washington as senator harris and Vice President biden get ready to make their first public appearance together since the big announcement. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, amy. Well today we will see the biden harris ticket together for the first time and witness something weve never seen before in our countrys history. This is a moment of huge significance for women and women of color, especially young women. Kamala harris today speaking out as the first black woman and the first asianamerican to be tapped to be Vice President. After months of speculation, joe biden over a video chat asking senator Kamala Harris to join the historic ticket. Biden then breaking the news in a tweet, celebrating his former rival as a fearless fighter for the little guy and one of the countrys finest public servants. Harris responding saying, joe biden can unify the American People because hes spent his life fighting for us. Im honored to join him as our partys nominee for Vice President. Harris is now the first black woman and the first asianamerican on a Major Party Ticket and only the third woman to be chosen for Vice President. I believe in joe. You know, one of the things that is so reflective of his personality is when he says there is room for everyone. Reporter biden has said he was looking for someone to be his joe biden, to have a relationship like the one he had with former president obama. One of the things i learned is that no president in the 21st century can handle the job by themselves. Its just too much that lands on your plate. Reporter former president obama said, by choosing senator Kamala Harris as americas next Vice President , hes underscored his own judgment and character. This morning, the other finalists are praising the pick. Former u. N. Ambassador susan rice calling harris a tenacious and trailblazing leader. Senator Elizabeth Warren saying, she is an inspiration to millions of women who see themselves in her. And from congresswoman val demings, to see a black woman nominated for the first time reaffirms my faith that in america there is a place for every person to succeed no matter who they are or where they come from. But it wasnt long ago that harris was bidens fierce opponent. At the first primary debate, she took biden to task for working with segregationist senators to oppose School Busing policies in the 1970s. Its a mischaracterization of my position across the board. I did not praise racists. That is not true. Do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose busing in america then . Do you agree . No. I did not oppose busing in america. What i opposed is busing ordered by the department of education. Thats what i opposed. Reporter harris later reportedly said that was all politics. Biden clearly willing to look past it. Two weeks ago a sign of what was to come. Photographers catching a glimpse of bidens notes at a press conference. The First Talking point about harris, reading, quote, do not hold grudges. But President Trump and his campaign are eager to dwell on that moment. Shortly after the announcement, trump went on the attack. Plus, she was very, very nasty to one of the reasons that surprised me, she was very disrespectful to joe biden and its hard to pick somebody that is that disrespectful. Reporter but now harris is poised to turn those famous debate skills on mike pence. They are set to debate in just two months, and while the president is eager to cast harris as a radical and far left, trump himself used to support her. Before running for president , donald trump donated 6,000 to harris campaign. T. J. . Thank you so much, and this groundbreaking choice is echoing across the country this morning. She is a former president ial candidate and was a standout in several highprofile Senate Hearings so in a lot of ways already a National Figure and rachel scott is outside the senators home in washington and like we say shes already a National Figure, but shes still about to reintroduce herself in a way on an even bigger stage, rachel. Reporter t. J. , good morning. Thats exactly right. As one voter who gathered here overnight put it, regardless of your politics, this is monumental, but senator Kamala Harris is no stranger to making history. The daughter of indian and jamaican immigrants she was born in california, a child of oakland. My mother was one of the greatest sources of inspiration in my life. I was taught that i had a responsibility to be a part of the fight for justice. Reporter the Howard University graduate became the first black woman to be elected District Attorney in San Francisco. After her inauguration she said her office was totally empty except for a chair in the middle, writing in her autobiography, i was happy to take my seat. As a young District Attorney, i walked into the courtroom for the first time and said the five words that would guide my lifes work, Kamala Harris for the people. Reporter harris was the first woman to serve as californias attorney general becoming Close Friends with joe bidens late son beau who held the same post in delaware. I got to know joe through beau because youve never seen its a rare thing to see such a special relationship between a father and his son. Reporter the prosecutor turned legislator gained National Attention for her pointed questions at Senate Hearings. Attorney general barr, has the president or anyone at the white house ever asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone . I wouldnt i wouldnt yes or no . Could you repeat that question . Reporter but faced tough questions about her record. When you had the power, why didnt you try to effect change then . Reporter struggling to keep momentum after she launched her president ial bid in oakland. Whats up, oakland . We want a president who has the ability to unify our country. Reporter now joining her former rival, joe biden, as the first black and asianamerican woman on a Major Party Ticket. And this historic announcement is generating a lot of excitement. Many voters who gathered here overnight said it was powerful to see the diversity of america represented on that ticket. But, you know, the big question is whether its going to be enough to spark enthusiasm and get the voters that joe biden needs to push him over the edge, robin. That is the question. All right, rachel, thank you. Joining us now is minnesota senator and former president ial candidate Amy Klobuchar. Senator, thank you so much for spending some time with us this morning. Thank you. We really do appreciate it. Always good to see you. I know that you supported that a woman of color be the vp selection by joe biden. Now, this is not only an historic moment for the Democratic Party but the nation as well. What do you believe that this moment means . First of all, kamala is my friend so ive got to look at it that way first and a lot of times when people run against each other, they grow farther apart. Sometimes people dont even speak to each other after, and she and i became Close Friends. We had a lot of fun together, and we grew to respect each other, and so i got to talk to her yesterday. She is going to be a wonderful candidate, but most importantly, a wonderful Vice President. In terms of the moment, robin, yes, its historic. Its historic because for so long, women of color have been as the movie once said, hidden figures, behind the scenes, building the rockets, doing the work, and then not always getting that limelight, and that changed yesterday when joe biden made this historic decision. I also think youre living in a time like no other with when you have the immigrants and the women of color, the africanamericans who have been so hit by this pandemic. When you look at the numbers, their rates of dying and their rates of being on the front line doing those essential worker jobs way over their weight, double, triple, quadruple in some of the states, and at the same time you have this National Movement over the murder of george floyd in my state, so all this comes together to make kamala such a great candidate and just we need someone with experience. We need someone who can work side by side with joe biden and truly govern, and thats Kamala Harris. What kind of challenge do you think that she poses to the Trump Campaign in this race . I think that she poses a challenge of being really smart and really tough and someone whos not going to take their grief and as someone who is going to simply do the work and go out there and theyre going to try to throw stuff at her. Last night instead of just welcoming her to the race, thats what leaders do, right . They say, look, welcome to the race. Thats not what happened with the president of the United States. He started calling her names, those names that he has used against so many women during his presidency, nasty and angry and those kinds of things. And to me, that just shows what kind of guy he is, but what you are now going to see today when joe biden stands with my friend, kamala, youre going to see what kind of woman she is. Thats someone of strength, someone of empathy, someone who loves her family and loves her husband. I think youre just going to see something thats going to make any attacks that donald trump makes against her just be washed away by the goodness of this decision and the goodness of our next president , joe biden. As you said, senator, there has been criticism already of Kamala Harris and many feel that some of the remarks have been sexist, something that you had to deal with during the primary. Yes. So how do you feel that that perhaps will be a factor in the coming months . I think its going to happen all the time. All of us have faced it. As i said at one of the president ial debates, if this was so easy you could play a game called name your favorite woman president or maybe name your favorite woman Vice President. You cant play that game because theres never been one and a lot of that is because women are held to different standards in politics, and a lot of things that people said seem innocent but a lot of times they really go at things that get in peoples heads. And i think the Biden Campaign has handled this so well rolling out this tremendous woman yesterday as the candidate. I dont think theyre going to let this happen. Weve learned a lot over hillarys election. Weve learned a lot when she was running for senate and then what happened to her when she was running for president. We have learned a lot, and i think you already see a whole force of women and men standing up for Kamala Harris and thats whats going to take. Again, i dont want all of that to lose this moment, not just the historic moment, an africanamerican, indianamerican woman on the ticket, but also who she is and the fact shes on the Intelligence Committee and has done ive seen it behind closed doors, not just in public. Shes going to be able to work on Foreign Policy the moment she hits the white house. Shes going to be able to work on justice issues with the work weve done together on the judiciary committee. All of her qualifications, senator, thank you so much. Well see Kamala Harris with joe biden later today for the first time together. But we appreciate your time as always. Thanks, robin. Amy. Robin, well have much more on Kamala Harris in our next hour. In the meantime, we want to turn to the latest on the coronavirus emergency. Florida and georgia reporting their highest daily death tolls so far and in georgia the backtoschool crisis is taking center stage and Steve Osunsami has the latest. Reporter like a number of this countrys School Systems, schools in cherokee county, georgia went back to classes last week, monday, and now this morning, more than 32,000 students and staff are needing to quarantine at home. The superintendent explains 59 Staff Members and students including one kindergartner have tested positive for covid19 across 19 of the schools so far. So many of us were desperately wanting our kids to be facetoface. Reporter etowah high is one the their schools and theyre having to shut down inperson learning until at least the end of the month. They were trying to follow protocols but at least 14 people tested positive for covid19 and theyre still waiting on test results from 15 others. Nearly 300 people are needing to quarantine from that school alone and the school says that number could increase, quote, dramatically with more positive test results. At a School Board Meeting tuesday night more than an hour away in Paulding County, parents with different feelings on the issue got emotional. Since july 1st the schools have recorded 53 positive cases, a former student on one side of the issue has started a petition. Five days ago i started a petition calling for Paulding County School District to cancel inperson instruction in all schools and return to Virtual Learning until the School District can ensure a safe, challenging and healthy environment for all students and staff. Reporter but a few current students are speaking out saying learning remotely robs them of social interaction that they need. Everyone has the right to make their own decisions and have opinions, but we shouldnt be forced to go online because others are fearful. Reporter parents were just as divided. What if worse comes to worse . Will Board Members contribute to the Gofundme Campaign for the medical bills after their son or daughter contracts covid19 . Reporter a number of different experts, associations, for example, that represent pediatricians say its actually better for children to be back in school if it can be done safely and thats the word everyone is struggling with, safely, robin. Safely, youre right about that, steve. All right. Thank you. Also this morning, well, tennis is back. The williams sisters and coco gauff are here to play. All three superstars hit the court in kentucky, won their first round matches in the first wta tournament in the u. S. Since the pandemic began. Serena had a comeback win in her opening round match at the top seed open airing on the tennis channel. Now serena and venus will face off against each other tomorrow and 16yearold coco plays later today. Serena playing in the silence. She said it reminded her of her junior days, guys, but she did hear her 2yearold daughter olympia snacking in the stands and said she flashed her husband a look to make sure she was chewing properly. Shes always a mom, even when shes on the court, t. J. And amy. Moms have always done a juggling act. No surprise there. A few other h
