Now to our gma cover story, with many schools closed, families are turning to learning pods, an option that is out of reach for families without means as the New York Times reported. One mom came up with a solution and Stephanie Ramos has much more on that. Stephanie, good morning. Reporter dan, good morning. Learning pods are becoming more popular now that many schools are shifting to online instruction because of covid19, but not every family can afford it. One mom in pennsylvania says she is determined to get her kids the school help they need without having to quit her job again. When shy rodriguez chose Virtual Learning for her kids this fall, she knew she would need extra help. In the spring the single mom of two had to quit her job to help her kids with school. Finding a balance without a support system seems pretty impossible. Reporter but learning pods where a small group of parents chip in and hire a teacher would be too pricey for rodriguez, running from 30 to 100 an hour. So rodriguez came up with a more affordable idea, kind of like a modernday babysitting club. She calls it childpooling. A pod of about four families take turns having Online School at their home so parents can go to work most days. So far she has two families that are interested. Being a lowincome parent, a single parent, its not something that you have to set aside money for or, you know, worry about a bill at the end of the week or the month, and taking that stress out, thats like a big deal. Reporter learning pods have become an obsession among many parents of means, but experts say, as more parents scramble to hire athome tutors for children, there is a widening gap among those who can and cannot afford the extra help. For those not in learning pods, there are ways to make the best of what you have at home. Kids need to feel like the place where theyre going to work is a serious place that they take seriously that they respect. Reporter parenting expert Rachel Simmons recommends letting your child decorate a designated workspace just like they may at school. Another thing to do is to really think about how your child learns best. If your child is a morning person, 4 00 in the afternoon isnt the best time to start with them on their schooling. Reporter and make sure kids get time with friends either in person or at least facetime. The bottom line is that we want to keep our kids feeling safe, feeling connected and feeling invested in their learning, and if we can do those three things, our kids will be very well off at a very difficult moment. Reporter rachel has another tip, she says parents cannot have the same strict expectations that we did before the pandemic. She says, loosen the reins and decide what the expectations will be before schools begin. Dan. Thats incredibly helpful. Stephanie, thank you so much. Lets get the forecast now, rob marciano out in norwalk, connecticut. Hey, rob. Good morning again, dan. I want to show you video of some new fires out in the west. We have been talking about california. Colorado has had a few as well, and portions of i70 shut down for a time yesterday with this fire near glenwood springs, colorado, thats not far from aspen. Some of the popular hiking trails have been shut down too because of the smoke. Lake fire update, 17,000 acres burned. Some evacuations lifted but theyre obviously very close to some of the structures there and some of the homes. What we expect with this heat wave is potentially to be as bad as the one in 2006 for california. That is not good. We got red flag warnings up from the northwest to the southwest all the way in through texas and look at portland today, could see 102, 100 tomorrow. This is measured in the shade good saturday morning. Heres the view from mt. Tam. We can see a little bit of fog, increasing subtropical moisture today allowing for a little bit more cloud cover and a sea breeze kicking up today. But the heat wave continues through next wednesday. Record breaking temperatures not as many today as wednesday. And looking at an elevated risk of heat related illness and fire danger. She was the host last year and she also has a talk show.
