President trump has 214. 270 is needed to win. Were waiting on alaska, arizona, nevada, pennsylvania, North Carolina and georgia. Voter turnout is expected to be high in this unusual Election Year but how high in comparison to past president ial elections . Abc 7 news Leslie Brinkley looked into that question today in Contra Costa County that could be a micro cost m for the rest of the bay area. On this white board, tallies of the ballots collected from drop boxes across Contra Costa County, over 365,000 voters already have had their votes counted. Right now, we still have about 180,000 ballots. Thats an estimate in house to process. Reporter i use the analogy of a fire hose. Well slam them as fast as we can but after friday they will dry up. The supply will turn into a trickle. Reporter so far turnout looks less than historic. In 2008 we had the highest turnout ever in a president ial election. It was 86. 7 , and all indications were that we were going to be able to hit that same target. In 2016, we had a 79 turnout. Reporter there was a tsunami of early mail in ballots but turnout was lower than expected with 40,000 at the polls, a quarter of what they thought. Turnout is projected to be on par with 2016. We have to wait until november 20th for vote by mail ballots that have been mailed by election day. Reporter by this friday, its expected 99 of the ballots will be in and tabulated. That martinez, im Leslie Brinkley, abc 7 news. There were certainly no doubt that california would vote biden for president. Here is a look at the breakdown for bay area counties. San francisco had the highest percentage of votes for biden. 86 compared to 12 for trump. Marin and Alameda County voters each gave biden more than 80 support. 33 of Solano County voters voted for trump. The votes for biden and trump do not add up to 100 keep in mind. Nationwide the president ial race is coming down to razor thin margins, more than anyone expected especially if you watch the polls. Abc 7 news anchor liz kreutz has a look at the race and how the polling ahead of election day painted a different picture. Many expected this race should be close but maybe not this close. Depending on arizona and nevada, there is a chance biden reaches 270 on the dot. But as we know, its not over until its over and the president is not going to go down without a fight. Reporter after a roller coaster 24 hours, the paths to 270 are coming into clearer picture. A abc news says joe biden is the apparent winner of wisconsin and projected to win michigan. It not over yet. What were seeing is something that looks and feeling unbelievable but also something entirely predictable and in fact, the largest probability, 50 probability going into this election the race would come down to pennsylvania, wisconsin or michigan. Reporter still, as weve seen, President Trump is ready for a fight in that tweet storm today the president continued to falsely assert Election Fraud saying democrats are trying to steal the election. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that any of that is true. Reporter in wilmington today, biden held his ground. We, the people will not surrend surrenderer. Im confident well emerge victorious. Reporter while biden does appear to have won back part of the blue wall trump flipped four years ago, the polls suggested his lead would be much wider. The most recent abc News Washington post poll had biden leading trump by 17 points in wisconsin. The currently tied at 49 by 20,000 votes. Pollsters for many this feels like deja vu and theyre now asking many we can ever trust the polls. Honestly, cant blame them. Reporter San Francisco state Political Science professor ma sell ya garcia says it appears the polls this year didnt capture the full electret. We were missing minority voters, rural voters, young voters, more importantly, new voters. Weve not seen the president since his address to the nation overnight. We do not expect to see him tonight, either. That said, as we all know, hes been actively tweeting. In fact, twitter flagged a hand full of his tweets today for misinformation. Ama . Liz, it is really striking how off the polls were. Can you talk a little more how this happened again . Right, four years ago there was an idea of a silent majority of Trump Supporters that showed up, it seems like they missed the mark to include certain voters in the sampling. Pollsters say polls arent meant to be predictive of a race, rather a snapshot of a sentiment. It seems hard to justify how they were so far off. Yeah, absolutely. Liz, thank you. Well, only a hand full of states have not been called at this point and they will end up deciding who becomes our next president. One of those states, crucial states in the lastminute push is pennsylvania and dion lim is live in philadelphia tonight. Dion . Reporter dan, with this race just too close to count here in pennsylvania, we have seen demonstrations across the city of philadelphia today, all the while election officials, they are vowing for a clean and accurate count. President trump himself is vowing to contest. Speaking with the same confidence we saw on Election Night at his watch party in wilmington, joe biden maintained confidence in the voting process the day after. Its clear that were winning enough states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Im not here to declare that weve won, but i am here to report when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners. Reporter after the Trump Campaign filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the count of mail in ballots in wisconsin and eric trump falsely declaring a victory for his father on twitter. His scheduled press conference in philadelphia. Im very confused as to why there is a lack of transparency. Reporter abruptly rescheduled. Calling for a reelection flooded the streets. Nothing illegal is going on. Thats it. Reporter Voter Suppression happens like this. It happens with seizing the counting of legitimate votes. Reporter and held a rally of their own. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Reporter in a state where 20 electoral votes are up for grabs where trump won by less than 1 in 2016. Biden doubling down on the message of fairness in the democratic process. We, the people, will not be silenced. We, the people, will not be bullied. We, the people, will not surrender. Reporter back out here live, all of the votes for pennsylvania not expected to be fully counted until tomorrow at the least. If biden wins nevada and arizona, that indeed puts him at 270 electoral votes on the dot. Now, that in turn means that whatever happens here in pennsylvania would be moot. Live in philadelphia tonight, dion lim, abc 7 news. Thats right. Dion, we saw camilkamala harris campaigning in michigan on election day. That is a state that has biden as the election winner. Trump is responding to this news, as well. Tell us more. Reporter as you can imagine, yes, he is. He has filed a lawsuit saying that all of those ballots, they need to be watched as they are opened. This is something they are already doing here in philadelphia. As for kamala, were waiting for her to speak at some point tonight although it is getting late, we shall wait and see. Back to you. Thank you very much. Coming up next, a live interview with a brks krrbc 7 n contributor phil talking about how this election could change elections for years to come. Im spencer christian. Seems like this election once again brought the countrys partisan divisions to ahead, the country evenly split in a lot of ways as we saw in the voting. Do you think this will heal after the election linger for awhile or away any time soon . I dont think its destined to go away any time soon. The divisions arent just geographic, north versus south and east versus west. Theyre within each state and its close within many, many of the states. So a Division Like that is not just political, its cultural. It has a lot of factors in it and shows that there are parallel universes right here in the united states. The question isnt whether well go away, the question is are we going to learn to live together and Work Together . And in this time with the covid virus, the question of things like bailouts and relieves and getting a National Vaccine program up and going, can we put aside whatever the differences are and start working together . That is the question facing and the test facing democracy. Yeah. It looks like people responding now agree that it will never go away. You can see 76 of people who are responding agree with you. Say it will never go away. The popular vote and Electoral College arent always in agreement about who wins the president ial election. So do we keep the Electoral College or is it time to abolish it . Every time we have a close election, this comes up. Its just like a close sports game. You start wondering are the rules right . Should we change it . For example, during the conf confirmation hearings for the recent Supreme Court justice, there were questions about should the senate be the same composition, should california have the same number of senators as the smallest state rhode island. In the Electoral College question, it boils down to this. Should we be doing it that way or by a National Sort of balloting . One question is how is that safer . Would that be more reflective . How would you do it . Would you do it with computers . Can they be hacked . Even has a criticism for the system because it is imperfect but you ask what are you going to replace it with . Thats when it gets dicey. The Electoral College, one of the big issues is in all but two states, its a winner but all situation. And in california, for example, lets say donald trump walks away with a quarter of the vote as it stands right now, biden gets all 55 of the Electoral College votes, under a new system that averages that out, it wouldnt get as many. What are we going to replace it with . By the way, whatever we replace it with has to be agreed to by, what, twothirds of the states and im not sure everybody will say what do we get out of this deal for a change . Its not perfect but the closest one we got. Uhhuh. Yeah, you can see a lot of people are saying abolish it. 88 . What do we replace it with . Thats this process going forward. We have the vote. Then we have the count. Then we have the court case over the count. Thats how the checks and balances continue to go. One of these days well wind up with it at the u. S. House of representatives again and they will decide it. Well have a question about that. Thats a slow process and one a lot of people say goes back to 1804 but like i said, its what theyve got, its old but if it works, you keep it. Because you dont have anything else. A lot of californians feel like they are not being fully represent represented. 90 want to apologize accomplbo. 90 of californians received a mail in ballot. Do you think this will be the standard for elections . It went well in california but chaos in other states and its very politicized. In california weve been leading up to it. We started doing it in counties and progressed. Some are doing it overnight and caused shutdown of the local polling places, and its more cost efficient. I think in california, it is even the governor gavin newsom said its heightened and hypered up. I think well go more and more to all mail in balloting. I dont know if other states will. Some people, you know, just like going down there and meeting up with other people and their neighbors and stuff and doing part of this ritual we call voting. They like going into the booth and being part of it. Thats good. When we get together to practice democracy, it reinforces democracy. If everybody is doing it far away and we dont come together, thats sometimes when we feel more alienated than ever. As long as we get the sticker. I miss the sticker. I mailed in my ballot, got the sticker but ive always liked showing up at the polls. There is something, you feel a little more part of the process. Phil, thanks very much. You can read his columns every wednesday and sunday. Now, as we continue here, abc news will have a onehour special on election 2020 tonight at 10 00 p. M. Including the latest legal battle tonight at 10 00 here on abc 7. Happening now, a group of Silicon Valley faith leaders is making a call for every vote to be counted. They are live where the group is staging an allday event. You see a group of people nice socially distant out there. This is calling for a peaceful transition, regardless of who wins the election. Several nonprofits are taking part. Abc 7 news kris reyes got their reaction to the president s speech last night. Today is a nonpartisan act of democracy, were saying as a Community Every vote must count. Reporter rabbis, reverends, priests stood side by side to voice concern about the state of Election Results and the anxiety over civil unrest. When the president came and when he said the words stop the voting. The voting has stopped. What we meant was stop all counting. There is a very real attempt by our current president to stop every vote from being counted. We have already heard the attempt to call the election before all legally cast ballots have been counted. To think that every single vote might not potentially be counted, that is completely unacceptable. And that is why we must stand up for democracy. Faith leaders wore yellow vests to indicate they are trained in deescalation and ready to step in if there is violence on the streets because of Election Results. They want to train more people in the community to do the same. We have put that we might have had in the past behind us and have unified ourselves to say that all votes must count. This must be a peaceful we pray patience is cultivated across this country as our election proceeds with the essential process of counting every vote. Reporter in san jose, kris reyes for abc 7 news.
