Hill with just days before the deadline. Tonight, it seems congress is on track for a federal shutdown and the division means shockwaves will be sent through much of american life. Good evening. Thank you for joining us. Im dan ashley. Its an important issue. And tonights abc seven advancer at 11 exploring what a Government Shutdown means for you here at home law makers have two days now. Thats all to get a deal done. And if you listen to the rhetoric out of washington, it doesnt sound like its going to happen. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy is dealing with infighting from conservative republicans. Then members say they only want to vote for individual bills, but they hold me up all summer and wont let me bring individual bills up. Then they say they wont vote for a stopgap measure that keeps government open. So i dont know where do you go in that scenario . The day at the end of the day will get it all. You democrats say they had a deal in place that would keep the government open. Republicans broke their word and turned their back on the agreement that they themselves negotiated. Why because they want to jam their extreme ideology down the throats of the american people. Thats why were in this manufactured republican crisis. A shutdown could affect everything from military members getting paid to access to National Parks like muir woods and yosemite. Now, this afternoon, we spoke with east bay congressman mark desaulnier. He touched on what else would be affected by a Government Shutdown. If youre going to travel that probably youre probably going to take longer. We know from previous shutdowns that tsa agents wont get paid and so that a lot of them have to go out and find other work until we reopen. So there are fewer of them. Air Traffic Controllers wont be on. Theyll be theyll be working, but they wont get paid when we asked about the process and a lot of the bickering thats going on, congressman desaulnier seems to echo what the House Speaker said, except he was a little more direct. All of these bills have been gone through the process and now at the last moment, just a handful of members are holding the rest of us hostage. So i think the main motivation here is these are folks who, like a lot of attention and theyre getting it, unfortunately. So they continue to do it. And when it comes to fleet week next week, the congressman says a shutdown would definitely have some sort of impact and make sure youre on top of this story as it unfolds over the next few days with the abc seven bay area app. Were sending alerts to your phone just like this one, to keep you in the know immediately. Just be sure to turn on the notifications when you download so we can get a get you in touch right away. Well, tonight some neighbors in the bay area are worried about something that should be so certain. Were talking about clean and Safe Drinking Water just basic stuff. Some in East Palo Alto are still nervous about whats coming out of the tap. You may remember some of the images last year when we brought you the story. Brown odorous water coming right from the faucet. Tonight, abc seven News Reporter Lauren Martinez was there with one group helping to find neighbors some relief and help build a better bay area. I want to know if our water is actually good. That is my question. Is it drinkable . East palo alto residents are continuing to question the quality of their water. On thursday, the Nonprofit Organization nuestra casa held a Community Event to connect residents directly affected. There have been a few incidents where water got cut off temporarily. I also am concerned about water quality. I dont drink the water directly from our tap. I wont drink it unless its filtered. A year ago, video of brown odorous water was taken by a resident who said thats what it looked like when pipes were getting cleaned. Nuestra casa collected a survey that was part of a larger report where hundreds of residents said they were concerned about the quality and aging water infrastructure. That water study brought things to our attention that we probably had overlooked. Months later, the city says theyre working on it and have received a 2 million grant for a water project. But the mayor still wants to know if people are buying bottled water. As an elected official, i dont know whats going on in everybodys home, so we need to continue to have the discussion not shy away from it. There are three separate Water Companies that serve East Palo Alto, and each Company Receives water from different sources. I think the rest of San Mateo County receives clean, good tasting water and that the people of East Palo Alto should as well. Laura feinstein was one of the panelists and works for the San Francisco bay area planning and urban research association. She said two small water providers in East Palo Alto have had troubles at times, meeting whats called the taste and odor standards for Safe Drinking Water so that means that the water is safe to drink. It wont harm your health, but it does mean often that it looks brown or it smells bad. Some residents want to know what comes next. If thats writing letters to the local politicians, if its changing the water source that we use every day. But just feel a little bit more empowered rather than just passively accepting whatever happens to come into our pipes. The mayor said the water system master plan needs more money and resources to fix the infrastructure here, but acknowledged this issue is taking too long in East Palo Alto, Lauren Martinez, abc seven news. New at 11 tesla is facing another lawsuit and this one accuses the company of discrimination and retaliating against black employees. In the east bay tonight, oakland held a town hall on its search for a new police chief. More specifically, it was the Police Commission seeking the publics opinion on whether fired chief Lauren Armstrong should be reinstated. I believe that he should be reinstated. I hope the commission has the opportunity to recommend him to be reinstated and i think that the city of oakland has suffered dreadfully since he was fired in this past february. What matters is that xiang tao was elected by the majority of oaklanders, and she made a decision. The purpose of this board is not to undermine her leadership. At tonights town hall went on, despite three members of the commission boycotting it, armstrongs name was frequently has come up frequently during other Public Meetings during this search for a new chief. He was fired over how he handled some investigations into misconduct. However, a recent report has him claiming he was cleared of any wrongdoing. All right.
