Defense forces have declared a state of alert for war following a surprise attack carried out by Palestinian Militants. The idf says at least 2200 rockets were fired towards israel, though hamas claimed at least 5000 rockets were fired, all landing in southern and central israel. Emily schrader says shes an israeli american and captured this video of the aftermath. So this is very close to where i live in tel aviv. You can see here where there was a direct hit. Images on social media show heavily armed Palestinian Militants on motorbikes and pickup trucks crossing into israeli settlements. This video appears to show militants taking hostages in israel near the border with gaza. Another video also appears to show a woman being taken hostage in gaza. Israeli forces launching massive retaliatory airstrikes. This building collapsing, flames then lighting up the night sky in gaza as those israeli strikes continued. Israelis prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu says Israeli Defense forces will immediately use all of its strength to destroy the capabilities of hamas. President biden spoke with netanyahu and has reaffirmed us support for israel in this moment of tragedy. I want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists everywhere that the United States stands with israel. Well make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves. The state Department Says secretary of state Antony Blinken spoke with Palestinian Authority president mahmoud abbas, urging him to take steps to restore calm and stability in the west bank. The fbi and department of Homeland Security says there is no specific intelligence indicating a threat to the us in relation to israel, but they did issue a notice to Police Across the us, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Manny ikuto civic leader and owner of mannys restaurant and Gathering Place in San Franciscos Mission district, is in israel. Hes visiting his family in beit shemesh, near jerusalem. We reached out to him there tonight. When i was in synagogue, there were two times where the sirens went off and all the kids had to hide underneath their parents and underneath the tables. Were screaming and crying. And the adults in the room had to sing as loud as we could to kind of drown out the sounds of the sirens and keep the kids from being traumatized. And back in the bay area, were getting local response to the conflict as well as a better understanding of whats behind it. Abcs seven News Reporter Tara Campbell joins us now live from the newsroom. She spoke to a variety of experts tonight on the conflict in the middle east. Tara. Yeah, lauren this evening i spoke with activists and lawmakers on both sides of this , as well as with a local expert who helps break down what could come. The sights and sounds of chaos in the middle east. A palestinian attack and israeli response. I think this is one of the most significant moments of Palestinian Resistance that we have ever seen. George bisharat is an emeritus professor at uc San Francisco and an expert on the middle east. Certainly the most significant military act of resistance ever against israel by the palestinians. And he says the palestinian attack has likely been long in the making for hamas to be able to pull this off in a surprise way like this is an incredible feat. Now, you know, whatever you make of it, its as a as a matter of a military operation, pretty incredible. As a jew and i know i speak for my jewish colleagues in the legislature, we are all both horrified and terrified about whats happening in israel. State senator scott wiener is a member of the california legislative jewish caucus. Israel is not perfect by any stretch. I have my own very public criticisms, but what happened today crosses a red line. Nothing justifies the terrorist attacks that we saw today. This is a horrific day. The violence that were seeing today is disturbing to everyone who cares about peace and justice. Edward ackman. Mitchell leads the council on American Islamic relations until the occupation ends, i fear were going to keep seeing this cycle of violence repeat itself for years and years to come. And as for what comes next, the professor says it could go several ways. Is the fact of the number of hostages provides the palestinians with a significant leverage against the israeli state power and may cause a quicker end to this than and less violent end to this than we might otherwise see. Or he says israel could respond. And as it has in the past. Another scenario is that israel will mass go ahead and do as it has done in the past. And possibly even worse. Now, so far, we know of a couple of events happening here in San Francisco tomorrow in response to these attacks. The Community Gathering is planned at shearith, israel at 11 30 a. M. Fire crews continue to monitor the aftermath of a wildfire that burned more than 30 acres in suisun city, threatening nearby homes and businesses. How close was the fire to your facility . I would have to say literally in our backyard. And it would have came in if the fence wasnt there. Jasmine peete is the sales supervisor at pick and pull an auto dismantling shop which sells car parts. The damage along the entire back fence line shows how the fire was kept out. That likely prevented another problem, says peete. Given the potentially toxic material at the facility. We deal with a lot of chemicals, fluids like gas, oil , freon. Sometimes we even deal with hazardous waste. We did have a response from cal fire and they did do an air drop for us, which helped contain the blaze as well. Captain matty scott with Suisun Fire Protection District was the first on scene. He says the fire broke out around 12 noon and quickly spread as the winds began to pick up speed. Despite the wet winter, the grass is dry, which is always a concern for this time of year, says captain matty. Especially here in Solano County. This is still fire season. Yeah, october, even into november, our we always get a warm spell for this time of year. In october. So this is can be expected in this part of the state. The macy family was evacuated for four hours. When they got home, they found parts of their backyard damaged by the fire burnt fence and plants, ashes everywhere, but no reports of injuries.
