Columbia university and new york city are the epicenter of the College Campus protests we are seeing across the country. Members of the nypd scene moving in with military equipment to take control. As now the bay area awaits a historical day of action of its own. Good evening. Im ama daetz, and im dan ashley. Well start with the unrest in new york boiling over with widespread arrests as officers move in both Columbia University and the city college of new york campus were stormed by nypd officers, some with swat vehicles and riot shields. As pro Palestinian Protesters stood their ground. The epicenter the propalestinian protests on College Campuses across the country is clearing out tonight, nypd officers moving in on protesters barricaded inside Columbia Universitys Hamilton Hall and removed the crowd at the encampment thats been on a campus lawn for nearly two weeks now. Officers climbing into that occupied building through the second floor window as Police Wearing helmets and carrying riot shields, waited at the entrance to the campus, Police Sources telling abc news tonight. Nearly 50 people have been arrested. Protesters refusing to leave by the universitys deadline yesterday, breaking into that building about 24 hours ago, the University Says that move inside Hamilton Hall is what compelled them to call in the police. The nypd says they found about 40 people inside the building, many of them arent students. We will always protect the right to protest, but we must balance that right with the right to keep students, the school and our city safe. Police say the people inside Hamilton Hall could be charged with burglary and criminal mischief, while the protesters outside could face trespassing and Disorderly Conduct charges. Tonight, protest organizers telling abc news they feel the university wasnt negotiating in good faith. Through days of discussions. We thought that the university would be more willing to negotiate and to communicate with their student body. In a letter to the nypd, columbias president is asking for officers to remain on campus at least through may 17th, when commencement is over, to make sure the encampments dont come back tonight. The nypd says all thats left of the protests are the tents students slept in, and it will be up to the university to remove them. We need an apology and an agreement with the students that the university is willing to come back to the negotiating table and talk with us regarding our demands, and hear those College Campus protests are also happening in the bay area, and tomorrow marks may day, which over the years has turned into a huge protest day for workers. There are dozens of protests scheduled for tomorrow, many of which are being linked to propalestinian rallies. Abc seven News Reporter j. R. Stone joins us live with more j. R. Umma. Dan, at this point, its unclear how big all of these rallies will be. An unclear if protesters will target any bridge or highway like they did two weeks ago, seeing a march and rally shut down the port of oakland on International Workers day, known as may day or may 1st, is nothing new. You can see one of the past rallies here this year, though, may day and the threat of another port shutdown comes just weeks after proPalestinian Protesters shut down the Golden Gate Bridge and interstate 80. And it comes as hundreds of College Students have taken to their campuses to protest the situation in gaza. As for what will happen wednesday, nobody knows. And of course, the protesters dont want anyone to know exactly where theyre going to be or what theyre going to do. Uh Law Enforcement is geared up, i think, for a pretty major, the responsive effort to keep highways and bridges open. Professor rory little of uc law, San Francisco, says there is much more acceptance of protests in the bay area. Many here protested themselves in the 60s and 70s. He believes the recent bridge and highway shutdowns by propalestine protesters, though, angered many people angry at the idea that these that a Minority Group of protesters could effectively shut down quadrants of the bay area, and i dont think that was good for their message. May day, though, will happen as College Campus protests across the country heat up. Tuesday night in new york city, police cleared the Columbia University encampment and arrested those who took over a campus building. A night and day difference from what were seeing in berkeley, where police have kept distance from the now 175 tents i was at the encampment today at uc berkeley and it was actually surprisingly peaceful. You could hear birds chirping. Im proud thus far and im really hopeful that we can maintain the peaceful atmosphere at uc berkeley, an atmosphere similar to current scenes at stanford and San Francisco state. I did reach out to San Francisco police and Oakland Police to see if they are preparing for wednesday with extra officers, but did not hear back from either department. Just know that your commute could be affected if there is another highway protest. J. R. Stone, abc seven news. Yeah, definitely good to keep that in mind, j. R. Thank you. Right now, the Vallejo City Council is considering whether to let elite Public Schools open a High School Campus in the citys downtown area. Abc seven News Reporter tim johns has been closely tracking this meeting tonight. He joins us live to explain the controversy. Tim yeah. Now, its important to note that the Vallejo Planning Commission actually approved this proposal to open the High School Campus downtown. However, that decision was appealed. And because of that, its now been sent to the Vallejo City Council, who will make the final decision. Currently, elite Public Schools runs a k through 12 Charter Program at a campus in north vallejo, but they are proposing moving the High School Students away from that campus and creating a new one in the citys downtown core, using a currently vacant building. Now, the school ceo says if the proposal goes through, the school would renovate the existing structure and have it ready for use by the fall. She tells me she thinks the move would help revitalize the surrounding area. Right now, theres blight, theres nothing there, the Building Owner says. For the last 20 years, theres been just few Little Singleton businesses, but nothing really to occupy the entire space. Though not everyone is on board with that plan, though, and during tuesdays special meeting, many came out to express their opposition. Some think the school could actually have an adverse effect on the existing and future businesses in the downtown area. Others also worry that the influx of students could increase violence in the area, and they question whether this location is the best place to create a school. We are not against schools, were not against Charter Schools. Were just looking at the location and saying this particular location is not good for a school. And oh, by the way, vallejo has lots of vacant School Campuses where we think it would now. Elite initially submitted their proposal for the project back in may of 2022. So whatever the City Council Votes tonight will conclude a nearly two year long process in the newsroom. Tim johnson, abc seven news okay, tim, thanks very much. The company hoping to build a new city near fairfield in Solano County, says it has enough signatures to qualify the project for the november ballot. California forever Ceo Jan Sramek says this shows that Solano County residents are excited about the plan that would build new homes for 400,000 people. They are all saying yes, we want to have a say in the future of this place that we love. Yes, we want to end these long commutes and have good paying jobs. Home here, close by. Yes, we want to have homes for us and for our children and we want to have them now. The signatures will now go to the county for verification. Weve reached out to the opponents of the project for a reaction, but have not yet heard back. Now to the historic shift in u. S. Drug policy, the biden administration, through the dea, is moving to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug. Yeah. Tonight, a statement from the department of justice says the deal is far from done. And as abc seven News ReporterLauren Martinez explains, there would still be some limits to how its viewed on the federal level. A momentous plan is in the works that would change federal rules on marijuana. The department of justice is recommending reclassifying marijuana from a schedule one drug that encompasses heroin and ecstasy to a schedule three drug, which includes testosterone and tylenol with codeine. The change would mean marijuana could be lawfully prescribed as medication. This is the most significant move in cannabis. This and really drug policy, since the inception of cannabis prohibition and the war on drugs. Sarah gersten is the executive director of last prisoner project, a National Nonprofit organization that works on cannabis criminal justice reform. We have people literally serving life sentences for selling 20 worth of cannabis, gersten said. Even though the vast majority of states have legalized marijuana, generating billions in tax revenue, an estimated 30,000 individuals are still incarcerated on cannabis charges. Some lawmakers are working to change that to, unfortunately, simply moving cannabis to a schedule three rather than removing it entirely from the controlled substances act, which would be descheduling. It doesnt actually bring state regulated marketplaces like california into compliance with federal law. Amber center is a cannabis justice advocate. Her nonprofit, called supernova women works to empower black and brown shareholders in the cannabis industry, the center said. With the potential change, Business Owners may see a tax relief when cannabis is officially reclassified by the government. That punitive tax will go away, which is pretty significant. Its like a 30 line item on, many cannabis businesses, books center said. Once reclassifying marijuana is official, the hope is the change could create momentum for other bills to push through congress, like banking relief with cannabis being, schedule one, banks are not allowed to work with cannabis businesses. The stigma is lowered just a bit , and, hopefully well have some movement there in san jose. Lauren martinez abc seven news a lot more to bring you coming up. The Alameda County board of supervisors decided tonight to delay setting a date on a special election to potentially recall District Attorney pamela price. The delay could allow them to combine the recall election with the november general election, saving millions of dollars. Regardless, recall supporters disapprove of the decision. Nobody cares about that. The level of inconsistency and all of the questions that went on today, i feel was kind of unprofessional. I feel that at this point in time, they should be able to answer every question , and they should have a procedure on what needs to be done next. This just didnt start yesterday. We started this a year ago, almost. Also today, price called on the supervisors to declare the recall signature count invalid.
