This combat Shadow tanker, tail number 0986, had launched at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 1996. The aircraft had flown from King Abdul Aziz Royal Saudi Air Base, Saudi Arabia, a facility that Americans usually called Dhahran Air Base. The HC-130 was scheduled to return about eight hours later, but sometime before 6:30 its crew saw a fuel-correction light begin flickering on and ofl alerting them to a discrepancy in their number one engine. They rehrrned to base and briefed the problem to the team of eight mainte- nance airmen who worked during the dayshift.l
