Kilpatrick Turnpike to go cashless next week Connor Hansen Replay Video Starting Sunday night, you'll no longer be able to pay cash on the Kilpatrick Turnpike. PikePass will still work, but people who don't have it will have their license plates scanned and will get a bill in the mail instead of paying at a toll booth. That bill could cost twice as much as the current cash fee. Converting the Kilpatrick is the first step in an effort to make every turnpike in the state cashless. Secretary of Transportation Tim Gatz says it's mostly a safety issue. "We’ve had more than 500 accidents at those mainline cash toll plazas in the last six years," Gatz said. "Paramount is the safety aspect and reducing those opportunities for accidents at those cash toll plazas."
