Lets begin with meteorologist rob mayeda who shows us if the weather will cooperate with the big Fireworks Show in San Francisco. Hi, rob. Hi there. Thats always the big question. Clouds of rain. It doesnt look like rains going to be a big issue. Even though we have some clouds coming on in tonight. Its pretty interesting. The initial wave of clouds here doesnt really have a lot of energy to work with. But overnight tonight into the first half of tomorrow could see a few sprinkles passing on by. You notice there barely enough to show up at the ground, but something you will notice in addition to that might be some patchy fog. Were seeing that right now in the north bay. Visibilitys down to about a half mile in santa rosa. Sought morning begins nice and cloudy with some low clouds and fog. Chachbs sprinkle or two late in the day. Then as we head toward midnight notice the cloudy skies. San francisco well see high clouds and patchy low clouds around the north bay. Overall conditions kind of like were seeing outside right now. A clear sky could mean a great view of San Franciscos annual fireworks display, but air quality will also be an issue. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana continues our Live Team Coverage. He is at the embarcadero tonight, which will be packed this time tomorrow night. Hey, sergio. Reporter hey, vicky. Its actually been quite calm out here this evening. Theres barely been a breeze out. Thats the same the same is expected to be tomorrow night as well. So on new years eve San Francisco is going to be under a spare the air alert. In years past low clouds made for a murky new years fireworks display, but not this year. The skies should be relatively clear. So smoke from the fireworks could hang around for a while. The problem with the smoke is that its filled with explosive materials. These fine particulates that settle into the atmosphere. Tom flanigan with the bay area air Quality Management district says new years revelers who are sensitive to the smoke should probably pick a spot upwind from the fireworks display, and if you use an inhaler bring it along. There isnt any forecast for wind. In fact, thats why we continue to have a spare the air day in alert. And theres a good potential we could even see an extended spare the air day into the new year as well. Reporter crews spent most of the day setting up the fireworks for the 50minute show. This professional crew is permitted to launch fireworks. Residents in most bay area cities are not. Its a whole lot safer to let somebody do it. This shows out on the water. Its very safe. You know, californias been very dry with all the drought years weve had. Its just not worth the gamble to start your yard or somebody elses home on fire. Reporter and for anyone hoping to launch a boat into the bay to watch the fireworks, the u. S. Coast guard wants boaters to know launching fierkreworks m your vessel is not allowed. Fireworks can easily be mistaken for a distress call, and water crews will respond as if a boat is having an emergency. Now, city leaders are hoping that everyone has a festive new years celebration, but theyre also hoping that people stay aware. In fact, theyve put out a whole lot of these electronic displays along the embarcadero so people will be kept up to date if there are any emergencies. Also theyre asking people to sign up for the citys emergency alerts on their cell phones. Reporting live in San Francisco, im Sergio Quintana, nbc bay area news. Good idea. Thank you, sergio.
