Viva las vegas. Headlines overseas. Top story. President trumps wide ranging News Conference hours ago and an extraordinary offer to meet the north korean dictator kim jongun in the Demilitarized Zone between north and south korea tomorrow. Kristin welker is traveling with the president. She was at the News Conference in japan. Kristin, good morning. Reporter peter, good morning to you from osaka. This is a diplomatic cliffhanger. Will kim jongun accept President Trumps invitation to meet him at the dmz . The president building suspense with that freewheeling News Conference that lasted more than an hour overnight, all coming on the heels of critical Foreign Policy talks. This morning President Trump touching down in south korea after unleashing this extraordinary tweet. If chairman kim of north korea sees this, i would meet him at the border dmz just to shake his hand and say hello. During an overnight News Conference the president was pressed on whether the meeting will actually take place. Spoke with the people. Kim jongun was very receptive. He responded and so well see because tomorrow were going to the dmz. I said while im there, ill shake his hand. Reporter even saying he would be willing to walk across the border into north korea, but what if kim doesnt show up. Of course i know that. If he doesnt, people will say, he was stood up by chairman kim. Reporter if the two meet it would be the first time u. S. And north korean leaders would come face to face at the dmz and mark the third meeting between the two men. Their last summit ended abruptly with no deal. We wont call it eye summit, well call it a handshake if it does happen. Reporter it all caps the high stakes Foreign Policy talks at the g20 summit where President Trump announced overnight that talks have resumed between the u. S. And china hitting the pause button on a trade war that had Global Markets on edge. And on russia, President Trump was pressed on this moment where he smiled when he was asked if he would tell russias president Vladimir Putin not to medal in the u. S. Election again. Dont medal. It seemed like maybe you didnt really mean it when you said yesterday, dont medal in our elections, mr. President , and then you guys both started laughing. Youre going to have to take a look at the words, i did say it. Reporter but offered this explanation. He denies it totally. How many times can you get somebody to deny something . He has in the past denied it. Hes denied it also publicly. Reporter and the president weighing in on the battle to replace him after senator Kamala Harris sparred with joe biden about his record on race. I thought that she was given too much credit. He didnt do well certainly, and maybe the facts were unnecessarily on his side. I think she was given too much credit for what she did. Reporter what we do know about the president s trip to south korea, hes going to hold talks with that countrys president and then address u. S. Troops that are stationeds there before heading home on sunday. Peter and shanel. Kristin welker traveling with President Trump. Thank you. Lets turn to jeremy bash who was in the obama administration. Hey, guys. President trump tweeting inviting kim jongun to the Demilitarized Zone. Put this into perspective for us. The last talks broke down. Since then north korea has started missile tests. Whats the risk reward . My possible thought is, hey, i happen to be in the neighborhood, can we get together . It looks a little bit sad, a little bit desperate. North korea has not dismantled its Nuclear Program in violation of u. N. Security council resolutions. I think this is a huge concession if it happens and we get very little for it. Lets talk about Vladimir Putin if we can for a second. The president and Putin Meeting during the course of this summit. The first time they were together since Robert Mueller determined that the russian government was responsible for interfering in the 2016 election in a sweeping and systematic fashion. The president seemed to brush off the russians not interfering and on fake news even though they are said to kill 25 journalists since putin came to power. Now hes inviting putin to commemorate the end of world war ii . Yeah, peter, i think the president is giving a green light to russia to medal again in our 2020 election, and in effect what weve gone with through the president , first he said no collusion, then he said collusion isnt a crime and recently he said collusion is good, i welcome it and i wouldnt tell the fbi. So when he sits next to Vladimir Putin and the head of russia, in a sense he says, we welcome your involvement. He sends the wrong signal. The president does often seem more at ease when hes with strong men than when hes with americas own allies. Let me put up a picture from a couple of hours ago. 24 this is the g20 picture. Thats mohamed bin salman. The two obviously engaged in a good conversation there. The president said he was very angry with the saudis and the fact that theyre responsible for the death of a Washington Post columnist but he also praised the crown prince there even though the u. N. Determined it was the crown prince and the royal family that were behind this. Does this give more ammunition to the president s critics . Theres a Little Something for every autocrat. We talked about north korea, we talked about russia. Hes made a huge concession to china, to xi shipping ping on the issue of trade and were going to hold off on tariffs and sell to huawei. He knows he needs our gulf arab partners to confront iran, which is very much still a tinder box in the northeast. Can i ask you one china question . Yes. You brought up huawei. The president banned American Companies from providing products to huawei. Theyre believed to be involved in spying not just in the u. S. But around the globe. The president seems to have backed off. He has gotten criticism. The message there . From the National Security perspective, its very concerning. What the president may be saying, we may have security concerns, but you may buy your way out. If you pay us enough, well relax our policies.
