Many of the 170 people will soon be going home. After two weeks in quarantine at travis and more isolation overseas. Now as por the latest numbers, more than 1800 people have died, more mainly in china due to the coronavirus. 73,000 people have been infected worldwide. And there is now at least 29 confirmed cases in the United States after 14 new patients were flown in from japan yesterday. Today in the bays thom jensen joins us live at Travis Air Force base in fairfield where these people are finally getting the chance to go home. Testify to be so relieved, thom. Reporter good morning. And base Officials Say theyll begin this morning releasing people in groups until all 170 of them are released later on this day. We were able to get the evacuees that have been here on base at a hotel for the past two weeks since they were evacuated from wuhan, china, the epicenter of the this coronavirus outbreak. We were able to get one womans story via facetime last night. She and her two daughters quarantined for the full two weeks and separated from her husband, their father who was back home in wisconsin. We have our temperature checked tomorrow morning and then were going to receive our documents to show that were ready and healthy to get exposed to the population. Our kids are really excited to see him after a few weeks being apart. Reporter daisy ross was visiting family in wuhan when the outbreak began starting the evacuations and quarantines. Were expecting Family Reunion here at the base Visitors Center to start later on this morning and while most evacuees are going home, the twoweek quarantine period is just starting for 14 other americans evacuated from that cruise ship youer talking about. The union working without a new contract since june is asking for a 2. 5 pay increase but tells the east bay times that pay is not the issue. The teachers care about serving special edition students and class size, the current class size is 26 and they want to make it 27. It is a huge backup. This is the east shore freeway. Listen up if that is your drive anywhere along the area from the carquinez bring down to the bay bridge. Here is the deal. The good news is their allowing traffic in one slow lane. So we do have that slow lane to alleviate the backup. This crash is between powell and ashby. These folks are getting off the freeway and taking the frontage road which is called frontage road. This goes back for miles. At least three miles now as you are coming down and backup and crashes in the area right around golden gate field and before university and pretty much everybody else funneled off at university if that is where they could get. A couple of miles of backup that has to be cleared out so san pablo is an alternate and up here go west across that richmondsan rafael bridge and take Golden Gate Bridge toward San Francisco if that is your destination. San pablo is relief that takes you through city streets that will get very crowded over the next half hour but the rest of the bay is clear. The east shore freeway westbound 80 huge problem. Theyre part of the first wave of people to arrive there from coronavirus hot spots overseas and theyre expected to be released a little later this morning. So far the virus itself has killed nearly 1900 people, mostly in china and infected 72,000 others. The search continues this morning for the missing palo alto couple who disappeared. The search crews are facing a big challenge in the north bay. Theyre looking for 77yearold Carol Kiparsky and her 72yearold husband ian irwin. The couple last seen and missing since saturday when they failed to check out of the inverness airbnb and left behind hiking gear and phones and car and the last time anyone spoke with them was on friday when irwin text his son. He was going to come down and watch my son play a game on monday. We were just arranging for the time. So he had every intention of coming back. Crews searched all day yesterday and can only say that they are pretty confident that the couple is not within a mile and a half of their airbnb. And a popular park in the south bay is shut down following a Mountain Lion attack. Rangers believe the animal injured a 6yearold girl at the Rancho San Antonio preserve in cupertino on sunday. A family friend was able to fight off the animal. The little girl received tetanus and rabies shots as precaution and the park will remain closed until the Mountain Lion is located and captured. It is the first Mountain Lion attack ever at that park. Dangerous streets in the city. Now San Francisco police are looking at this video hoping to make arrests in a side show that involved more than a hundred people. It happened at about 10 00 on sunday night at geneva and naples in the excelsior neighborhood. The side shows are coming to San Francisco because other bay area cities are cracking down and calling for sf police to follow suit. Were talking about seizing their vehicles to inhibit their ability to do this again. Police are also looking at body cam video from that incident. They say part of the reason officers didnt make arrests at the time is because they simply were outnumbered. 5 35 and happening today, Alameda County leaders want to hold utilities accountable for safety violations. The District Attorney is pushing a new bill at a News Conference today. The utility accountability and wildfire prevention act of 2020 aims to give local District Attorneys enforcement power if they dont comply with Safety Standards and requirements. The plan comes as investigators blame pg e equipment for starting a deadly campfire in 2018. It is 5 36 now. Safeway workers plan to rally outside of the store in the peninsula. Workers have already authorized a strike. And ini in the latest move, they canceled the contract extension. Safeway recently issued a statement saying it is committed to more negotiations. Right now there are no new talks underway. Todays rally takes place outside of a store in belmont. Were tracking the bay area housing crisis in our special cover called making it in the bay. One city is looking at a state law. Housing advocates say that the city of san mateo is looking into taller buildings to increase the number of Affordable Housing units. That new bill said low Income Housing projects can be bigger regardless of what local guidelines allow. Already in downtown a fivestory building is move in on east fourth avenue. Now under the new state law the building could be turned into a sevenstory building with more than 200 units for lowincome families. It is up to the developer to add another story. And happening today, milpitas Leaders Debate new regulations for shortterm rentals. Council members have talked about creating new zoning and collecting a 14 tax. That is similar to the ones paid by hotels. Other new rules may include limits on rental days per year and parking provisions. Other cities have made similar moves including San Francisco, oakland and san jose. San francisco reportedly ready to launch a major Street Safety redesign in the bay view. The mtsa has nine new projects to enhance bike lanes. Other projects would with boost access to Public Transportation like muni and b. A. R. T. The total cost will sked 8 million. Lets bring it back home as we enjoy some much warmer temperatures. Here in the bay area, it is a clear view this morning. We dont have to deal with the fog in san jose or elsewhere. The high temperatures, 70 degrees today. This is well above normal. And weve seen some warm springlike weather across the bay area the past few days. Were up to 69 in santa rosa. San francisco today will reach 62 degrees. Also a lot of tree pollen floating through the air. Probably if you have allergies you dont need me to tell you this pu it is high on the pollent count. Mostly pine, elm and juniper trees blooming with the temperatures in the 60s and 70s. And still dry across the region. Weve seen more clouds moving in. And that is kept the fog from developing this morning. And as we go into the weekend with, well see a couple of more disturbances moving in. But i am already seeing a change in the pattern that kept us dry all month long. Even though were still seeing dry weather and still seeing the disturbances moving in and theyll kind of break down that High Pressure, push it of off toward the west and seeing lows moving in so possibly rain moving in by the middle of next week. We know that this is normally a wettest time of the year in january. We usually measure over two and 3 4 inches of rain and over 2 1 2 inches of rain for the month of february. It would be nice to get average rain for the month of march but we do have a lot of catching up to do so well see if that happens. Heading over to mike, it is a tough drive for contra costa county. Very tough. But i just saw what i believe is at least one tow truck arriving to the scene of this overturned big rig right here. Just behind here. And an axle in lanes. Your lanes except for the slow lane are blocked here. Traffic being relieved from the backup toward university and this is a huge problem for the east shore freeway. Well show you on the map there are a couple of other crashes registered in the backup. And it goes back now past golden gate field. Waze suggest, the nbc bay area wazers, that is the name of our team, you take san pablo to orinda toward the bay bridge to get past the backup. Over two hours to get through the mess if you go down that route including the east shore freeway. Now todays vote will consider two potential safe parking sites allowing people in rvs to stay for three days. Happening today, workers at san jose valley medical plan to raise concerns about what theyre calling a staffing shortage. They argue it is causing increased wait times for patients, up to 18 hours.
