That step by the japanese, canceling school for all kids until spring break is over in early april. Weve now got more than 82,000 cases worldwide, 2,800 deaths but lets stress no deaths in the United States. Still with the coronavirus spreading, jetblue is waiving all change in cancellation fees if someone is concerned about the coronavirus and the president now trying to reassure the country. This morning the cdc is confirming a person in Northern California has contracted the coronavirus, but that patient never traveled outside of the country or came into contact with another person who is known to be infected. Why might that be a big deal . Because its the first sign, say experts, that the disease may be spreading within a local community. There are now 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the u. S. , but so far there have been no deaths here. Because of all weve done, the risk to the American People remains very low. Reporter on wednesday, President Trump, flanked by Public Health experts, was downplaying the coronavirus threat. Were very, very ready for this, for anything. Reporter the president also appeared to contradict a cdc warning from earlier in the week, that an outbreak in the u. S. Is all but inevitable. I dont think its inevitable. It probably will. At the same time, the degree of risk has the potential to change quickly, and we can expect to see more cases in the United States. Since airport screens began, Atlanta Airport says 200 travelers who arrived from china have been under home quarantine. So far, none have required hospitalization. Meanwhile at the university of nebraska Medical Center, the first human trial for a coronavirus treatment is under way. The first patient, one of 14 Cruise Ship Passengers from japan now undergoing treatment in omaha. Eventually 400 patients will be in the trial worldwide. Its been a longtime fixture here in milwaukee. The facilities are closed this morning as the Investigation Continues and officials try to figure out why the gunman opened fire on his own colleagues. This morning, five innocent people and their killer are dead after a mass shooting rampage in the heart of milwaukee. Confirmed active shooter. Shooter still at large. Reporter all of the victims were employees of the Molson Coors Beverage company. The 51yearold gunman worked there, too, but police have not released his identity or motive. The suspect was an employee of molson coors and died of an apparent selfinflicted gun shot wound. Reporter the deadly shooting happened on the massive campus which employs a bt about 1,000 people. Im going to call this a war zone. Reporter tactical teams flooded the area, officers with long guns, employees forced to seek shelter, hide anywhere they could. Nearby schools and business s also placed on lockdown. There are five people who went to work and thought they would come home. You think about the families of those individuals. Reporter some workers had to stay inside the buildings for hours until police cleared them. Were checking off each employee one by one. Reporter President Trump calling the gunman a wicked murderer. Our hearts break for them and their loved ones. We said our condolences will be with them. And its a terrible thing. Terrible thing. I was just writing from my gut this show is that. This is like my version of the fulllength dracula musical. If you were going to give me the elevator pitch on this one yeah. Give me what it is. My version of the wizard of oz, four people desperately searching for whats missing in their lives. If they can find the missing thing at the center of the mystery, they may find that thing. But they find out it was with them all along we all have the magical part in us. Also, weve forgotten to connect with one another the whole show is about community, magic, and art. Maybe it is meant to make us feel more positive than the world feels right now. This scene came from a documentary you saw. Yeah. You saw something, the lights went on and you were like, yes, this is kind of what i want to do was it easy to go from seeing that documentary to putting it all together no. Its very hard every time. Yeah i mean, again, its just like, what if youre wrong you have this blank page youre going to write and say this is me i think this is great. Its always scary. What if people dont like it i have the episodes now and im in love with them. Its my favorite thing ive ever written. Wait. You love this more than forgetting Sarah Marshall when you wrote that back in your 20s . It captures, for me, the same spirit of like art as an act of defiance, and theres something rebellious about it. That movie ended studio romantic comedy with a lavish puppet musical. Thats right. And i wrote this with the same sense of fearlessness and maybe lack of strategy its just what i love. You can tell that you love it, just looking in your eyes. You turned 40 recently. Yes yeah. Its all rounding out, and its really cool when it comes to a project like this, you actually had to call the documentary filmmaker and say, hey, i want to take a page from this. How did that conversation go oh, he hung up on me. I said i have an idea. I know how to adapt this its the exact opposite of fight club. Its art as an act of defiance i know how to do it. And he said not yet and hung up on me. A month later i got an email with a time and location in San Francisco and i showed up and i was put through this mysterious induction that you see in the first episode, and i then got an email at the end of it that said weve been watching you. You have defined nonchalance and were going to give you the rights to this project. How weird did you want to bug out when the guy was doing that weird stuff you know what the whole experience reminded me of how i think we want to feel, that theres magic around every corner and that someone is going to show up and tell you that its better than how it feels if you just look for it and so i think thats what the show attempts to be. Youre an historian. Not a theologian, pastor, preacher. No. I practice without a license. Youre a man of deep faith yourself why did you want to write this i did it sort of as a series of sermons for our church in new york years ago if you go back to the scriptures themselves, if you try to go back as best you can to what unfolded in real time and the story that was so important to those first generations, it actually deepens my faith as opposed to weakens it. I was going to say, because as an historian, you cant turn that off in yourself. No. And the way you look at things. But we know more about jesus than we know about a lot of ancient figures. The gospels are not biographies in a classic sense they were written to convince. They were written to convert but you look at it and its really the last sermon, as it has been called, father forgive them, for they know not what they do. Assuredly you will be with me in paradise its this remarkable message, particularly in our own time, of mercy and love and duty. They are but theyre not easy. No. This is not an easy read. I was looking at some of them. Some of them we remember when christ, when jesus forgives on the cross. But then there are things where he says i thirst my god, why have you forsaken me forsaken me. Theres doubt, suffering, aloneness. Its heavy thats why the historical nature of this means so much to me this is not a fairy story. This is we know that as well as we know anything that anything that happened in the ancient world, that about the year 33, jesus of nazareth is convicted by pontius pilate, went on the cross, suffered and died and is risen from the dead. Thats how we tell time. The architecture around us, the infrastructure of much of western life its the single most important event arguably in human history. So understanding what the evangelists meant, what did those words mean at the time why were they included in the gospels, whats the message . Its as important a story as anything that we talk about. There are these seven different statements your book is like a devotional, as you reflect on each of these statements and what they mean. Is there a through line . Because on the surface, theyre very different kinds of statements. They are. They are different, and thats fascinating. These seven remarks, its an ancient discipline to preach on these on good friday the through line is this is a human being, who is also divine, but you cant move the human part away. He suffers he bleeds. He dies. We can then argue all we want about what that meant, but there is the inescapable, i believe historical, reality, that this remarkable figure, whom people like me believe is the second person in the trinity, was a real person who breathed, he gave us a message and possibly a portal to salvation. You say youre not a prophetizer, youre not an evangelist, but theres something to learn from these ancient times for anybody who wants to look and reflect on these words. You know, religion is very divisive, like Everything Else in our life now, but it doesnt need to be look at the Civil Rights Movement Martin Luther king, rosa parks, john lewis were doing what they did, not because of an abstract idea but because of the sermon on the mount the core christian message is to love your enemies and turn the other cheek. Lord knows i fail in it six times before breakfast, but were called back to that cross again and again.
