Foreign passengers, we are told, will take chartered flights going directly to the tarmac. Again, no contact with the public. The crew will be quarantined also and treated on board. Now, remember, of the 21 people who tested positive on board, 19 of them were crew members. Were told that after the passengers get off, the ship leaves with those crew members still on board. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana has been on board with people from the grand princess and is live with their concerns. Reporter one passenger i talked with says hes excited to be docked because it means theyll no longer be in the choppy waters outside the golden gate where they have been for the last couple of days. Another woman i talked to by video call says shes not looking forward to being quadrant. We all have lives we have to get back to. We have families that are counting on us, jobs. And i think im beginning to feel like a prisoner. Reporter she is traveling with family from wisconsin. Shes been able to talk to people for the last few days. And this afternoon, she says they did get a good piece of news from the captain in addition to news that they are going to be docking. Passengers are being allowed to leave their cabins in small groups and go to the ships decks for some fresh air right now. Thats a relief because for the last few days they have not been allowed to leave their cabins. She sent me a recording of the captains announcement. They will be required to stay at least six feet away from each other while theyre up on the decks. However, please hands before leaving your cabin and useilable on the open deck areas. Face masks must be worn at all times and please avoid touching your face and eyes with your hands. Reporter now, here at the port of oakland there are already teams of people making preparations to handle the 3,500 passengers and crew of the grand princess when it docks. Once those passengers disembark, theyll go to one of these military facilities, Travis Air Force base, miramar in san diego. Nearly a thousand on board the ship will go to one of these two locations. People from other states will be flown to Lackland Air Force base in texas or Dobbins Air Force base down in georgia. While the waiting game goes on here, the waiting is over for passengers on a cruise ship in florida. After waiting hours for test results for two members, its over. It was supposed to dock in ft. Lauderdale this morning but couldnt because it has two crew members that were previously on the grand princess. The results are negative. The ship is now cleared to dock. A senator from texas is selfquarantining himself. Senator ted cruz says he attended the cpac event in maryland last month and briefly interacted with someone who has since tested positive for the virus. That interaction included a handshake. The texas senator says he has not experienced any symptoms but as a precaution he will selfquarantine. Tonight there are more than 500 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the country. At least 21 people have died. 64 of those cases here in the bay area. That number does not include the cases on board the grand princess. Those are separate. Today Contra Costa County has five new cases. Contra costa has 37 confirmed cases. I think overall the people for the people of oakland should be low. The ship is going to be come into a port that is being encased with fencing and people will be very far away from where the ship is docking. So i think that the people of oakland should remain calm and not be worried about what is going on. You have some concerns, we were talking about it, concerns about the time between when the patients are being tested and when the test results come back. Sure. Its not clear to me what will happen. It sounds like patients are going to be tested. And patients who are positive should go to the hospital and those that are negative will be quarantined. So in the time between being tested and when the results come back, its not exactly clear whats going to happen. Does it appear to you that the United States was prepared for this . I mean, you are in this business, so to speak, of the Infectious Disease containment and dealing with it. After all weve known and the threats weve had before, it would appear we would have been ready at this time. Its easy to look back and say we should have done this and should have done that. I think that from where we were in 2014 when Ebola Outbreak happened, we have made strides. Think there are things we need to think about and learn from this particular situation, things like how to effectively manage patient ws who are sick, how hospitals can deal with a large influx of patients, how to get testing up and going quicker.
