That red line down here, thats Santa Clara County. On april 6, right here, there were 79 people in the icu. Thats the highest the number has gotten. As of yesterday, though, that number down to 66. Now, you can see our numbers in Santa Clara County are much lower than the state, which is this yellow line. You can see a steady climb there. Yesterday more than 1,100 people were in the icu. Tragedy and heartbreak is quickly turning into anger for many families, especially when it comes to our local Nursing Homes and rehab facilities. Alameda county is looking into the possibility of seven more positive cases at a hayward rehab facility. This comes on the same day as a family is demanding answers to why their loved one died at the Gateway Care Center. Thats in hayward. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd has the details. Reporter 87yearold castel was fit for his age. He and his wife exercised regularly. 9 the former manager of American Airlines was among nine patients who died at Gateway Care Center from coronavirus. Now the family wants the state Health Department to investigate. Gateway allowed its staff to come to work without any protective equipment, without any masks, without any gloves. That, to us, is telltale proof of what we would say is criminal negligence. Reporter as the family is demanding justice, jaime pitinos family is also grieving. Late tonight, pitino got bad news. His 84yearold grandmother passed away. She lived at gateway for two years and was rushed to the hospital on friday. She had Health Issues and later, according to pitino, tested positive for covid19. There has to be more accountability. This should not have so many positive cases there at the home. We werent aware of it until news broke. Reporter for both families, the numbers are shaocking. Over 60 people inside gateway have been infected with the virus. So far, one of the largest outbreaks among Nursing Homes in the bay area. She deserved better. Following the outbreaks, new screening procedures are now in place at Nursing Homes in three bay area counties. Facilities in contra costa, alameda, and sonoma counties will screen all staff and visitors for temperature and symptoms. This is in addition to a strict mask to facilities patients and residents. Outbreaks have been reported in several cities including orinda, pleasant hill, and as we just saw cheryl there in hayward. One of San Franciscos largest homeless shelters is empty tonight after a major outbreak. On friday, 70 people from the m. S. C. South shelter tested positive. The shelter is at fifth and bryant. Today, though, that number climbed to 91. The shelter empty now. All of its residents moved to hotel rooms over the weekend. City leaders say there are now more than 400 unhoused people that have been moved into hotels. It is life or death. We are doing okay, but, again, as you can see, especially with our shelters, the numbers can increase significantly. We shouldnt have to wait until somebody gets sick or wait until people around them get sick to move them into a safer environment. Thats supervisor matt haney. Chp says the shooter hit two people in a gray honda accord. The victims have whats noeknows moderate gunshot wounds. Public transit drivers in San Francisco are sounding the alarm about safety. Muni drivers say they want more protection from covid19, or they want service shut down. Nbc bay areas jean elle has more. Reporter a limited number of buses are still rolling here in San Francisco, but drivers and riders say some of them are just too crowded for social distancing and not everyone is covering their nose and mouth. Theres a lot of people get on, and theyre filthy. Ive seen people do snot rockets on the bus. People are not social distancing. Reporter stephan says riding the bus in San Francisco doesnt feel safe. Drivers feel the same way. Its extremely dangerous for the operators because of the fact that the buses are overcrowded. A lot of operators dont want to come to work. Reporter the president of the transport Workers Union local 258 says five operators have tested positive for coronavirus. Others are in quarantine. During the pandemic, light rail is shut down and bus service is reduced from 89 to 17 routes. On this line it can be pretty crowded. Reporter Union Leaders say they want a mandatory mask requirement for all riders. Help limiting the number of people boarding buses, or a complete twoweek shutdown. So in order to reduce the amount of exposure, the levels of exposure, we might have to shut this system down in the name of Public Health and safety, in the name of reducing the spread of this virus. Reporter the sfmta says it has no plans to shut muni bus service down and its working on addressing driver concerns. Stephan is hoping passengers and drivers can be protected and keep rolling. I dont blame them. Reporter the sfmta is urging people to only take the bus if it is an essential trip. The Operators Union says it has a meeting with the sfmta on wednesday to discuss its demanding. This nightclub was at schaaf ter avenue in the bay view in a warehouse. Police say believe it or not, it began operating right after the stayathome order was issued. Officers raided the club on saturday. They took pool tables, fog machines, liquor, the whole thing. The illegal club didnt even have sprinklers, fire alarms or proper exits.
