But tonight in cities across the country and world, people are gathering to honor the life of george floyd 15 days after his death. And here in downtown san jose. This memorial is more of a like a starting idea that we can do more than just protest. Reporter vigils spanning to italy and france on this day george floyd was buried. The 46yearold was a father of three kids, and his death has awoken a global fight against racial injustices. No justice, no peace reporter demonstrations, protests, millions raising a fist and taking a knee, sometimes alongside law enforcement, agreeing in the pain and pledging to listen. This is the beginning of the fight. Its not the end of the fight. Reporter and today a final goodbye in houston after a week of commemorations with eulogies from family and friends. Organizers say theyre relying on prayer and solidarity to End Police Brutality demanding the Police Department gets rid of officers who are not there to protect all the people. The oakland Police Department says nearly 200 businesses were looted, vandalized, or destroyed on may 29th. Opd is trying to identify and arrest those responsible, so theyre asking for any video or photos that might help them. The department is also asking Business Owners to file a report online. Well, after get, san joses mayor and police chief are making changes. During an online session of the city council, people denounced the actions of sjpd. On the first night of the protests, San Jose Police say officers used 400 rounds of pepper spray and rubber projectiles to quell the crowd. Officers say they were responding to people throwing rocks and bottles and attacking them. While the chief defends his officers, he is making changes, including new limits on when officers can use socalled rubber bullets. The chief says theyre reexamining all tactics as they do after every major situation. Did we do everything perfect . Absolutely not. Are there things we can work on and improve . Absolutely. Is there better training we can have . Yes. Chief garcia says hes already reached out to Community Leaders and groups to help continue the conversation. The combination of the increased testing that were doing, a combination of some of the lifting of the Public Health measures that were seeing. So its something that we definitely need to keep an eye on. Reporter in the bay area over the last week, santa alame counties all report doubledigit increases in new cases daily. Im seeing a lot of people that are just walking around, like barefaced, and a lot of people actually kind of doing it. So it feels a little bit unsafe sometimes. Reporter california isnt the only state seeing an increase in coronavirus cases. In arizona, the state is urging hospitals to keep emergency plans activated after seeing covid19 cases more than double. Health Officials Say eight out of ten hospital beds are being used and warning they could hit full Hospital Capacity in a matter of weeks. This may not be a spike. It may be the new normal in terms until we get a vaccine. Reporter texas is also seeing a spike in hospitalizations. No one knows yet how nationwide protests will impact the spread of the virus. Here are the updated numbers. Alameda county has nearly 4,000 reported cases. The county added 37 new cases just today. Contra costa county reported the highest number of new cases today, adding 68. Santa clara county with 46 new cases. On the business side of things, where can you sit down and have a meal . Take a look. Seven of our nine counties have now reopened restaurants to outdoor dining. Those are in green. San franciscos opening monday. Alameda county has yet to announce when restaurants will start reopening in terms of dining here. If you want to get a haircut, youll have to go to the north bay. Only sonoma, napa, and solano counties have reopened barbershops and salons. Contra costa county will allow them to reopen on june 17th. The other counties in red have not announced a reopening date. And what about indoor Retail Shopping . Family and friends want to know why chp officers had to use deadly force. They didnt try to peacefully arrest him. They acted like what they wanted to do was kill him. You would think that the police would try to like peacefully arrest people when they have to try to prove the people wrong, that theres not Police Brutality, you know, how they like to claim. But no. Reporter Oakland Police now giving details on what happened in the 9600 block of terry street in east oakland. This cell phone video taken shortly after the shooting. The report says chp officers spotted a Dodge Challenger srt sedan driving recklessly in the neighborhood. Investigators were told the license plate on the car was stolen, and while attempting to make a stop, salgado allegedly started ramming chp cars. Family attorney john burruss doesnt believe thats what happened. What happened is he was shot. His foot was on the pedal, and the car continued to go. Reporter the official report says three chp officers fired their weapons. Salgado was shot several times and later died. His girlfriend, who was four months pregnant, was injured and is in stable condition. The car salgado was driving was one of the 74 cars stolen from the san Leandro Chrysler dodge dealership on june 3rd. It doesnt matter what the reason was. San francisco fire investigators say theyve pinpointed precisely where that huge fire started at pier 45, but they still dont know how. Thats the word from the citys fire chief, who toured the burnedout pier along with mayor london breed today.
