The governor of florida has not mandated mask wearing. Instead, its a patchwork of rules. Palm beach county sending every resident masks in the mail but making everyone wear them a chal at 126,000 and still climbing. The cost associated with coronavirus can be calculated in many ways. Here in florida where they have no state income tax and everything relies on sales taxes, they have calculated the loss for april at 900 million. Money that is used to fund the state budget. Kerry sanders starting us off in south florida. Thanks so much. Dr. Patel is a Public Health expert who helped in response to a flu outbreak when she worked in the obama administration. Shes an nbc news medical contributor. Good morning. Good to see you. Anybody who thought the country had turned the corner or coronavirus, need only look at the national spikes, setting new records. All the spikes in those statements like florida that kerry just reported on, as you look at these cases, what is behind the spike here . Theres a pretty interestiwi. If you go back to three months ago, you could almost just literally take the map of where you see the spikes today and reverse with looking at the states where we had the spikes, as you recall, northeast corridor and parts of the Pacific Northwest and some of california. It really is kind of an ee flve flip. Many of us were wondering, when and where are we going to see trends in the south, particularly florida . Thats what we are seeing. Theres a couple we think theres several things happening. The reopenings contributed to this. We are, in fact, also doing a lot more testing. That doesnt mean were picking up more cases. It just means that in the beginning, we were really only testing some of the more vulnerable people. Remember, people who got to the hospital, people at nursing homes. Now we are getting a pretty even sense that there is a growth, especially in younger people. Again, i will reiterate, its not just because we are testing that we are picking up more cases. We are seeing true what we Call Community spread. How do we know that . We know that because for every person who gets infected, they are giving that infection to at least one to two other people. We know that that shows a strong sign of person to person spread, particularly in that 18 to 45yearold age group. As you say, its following a pattern that Public Health experts like yourself have been telling us about since february and march, that it would die down in hot spots like new york city and come back in other places across the country. Is that just an affect of reopening . What else is behind this . You know, reopening certainly contributed to it. We also have now looked at trends in states that have had mandates around mask wearing just to be clear. This is now something that we have remember several months ago, we werent sure if we should have people wearing nonmedical masks on their face. Now we have compelling data that just the simple act of mandating facial protection could decrease cases in half. You did see early on when the evidence emerged that states were clear, particularly new york, about mandating mask wearing. I also think that another contributing factor to this is somehow that we do think that the virus is just that infe infective. We know congregation, together in their homes, they have beenrustrated being cooped in, we know that is the top source of people getting infections. In the beginning, certainly, even at stay at home, that was not necessarily the source of infections. Its several things all happening at the same time. Now we see big states like florida and texas rolling back some of the reopening to try to tamp this down. Dr. Patel, great to have your insight. Thank you so much. This morning, President Trump is denying reports that he was briefed in march that Russian Military intelligence has been offering bounty money to talibanlinked militants to kill american troops in afghanistan. The president tweeting just moments ago, quote, nobody briefed me, Vice President pennsylvania or tpence about attacks by russians. The president criticized the New York Times who was first to report this. Peter alexander is at the white house. Reporter good morning. This morning, Top Democrats and republicans are demanding answers from the trump administration. It comes after that disturbing report, first detailed by the New York Times, that a Russian Military spy unit offered to pay talibanlinked fighters to kill american troops in afghanistan. The bounties were offered last year. Its believed that some reward money was paid. Whats not clear is whether it was connected to 20 americans killed in combat in afghanistan in 2019. Nbc news has notdent says he neither the Vice President was briefed. He adds everybody is denying it and there may not have been many attacks on us there have not been many attacks on us. Its raising questions about why the president would have been kept in the dark about a deadly threat or whether the u. S. Would respond. The taliban and Russian Foreign ministry are denying the allegations this morning. The former Vice President , joe biden, called the failure to punish russia a betrayal of his most sacred duty and he says the Trump Presidency has been in his words, a gift to vladimir putin. The Top Republican on the Foreign Affairs committee reached out to the administration for more information. Said if the allegations are true, the Administration Must take serious action to hold the putin regime accountable. Willie, back to you. Thanks so much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and press. We have seen coronavirus come surging back as we were talking back in many states earlier this the show. We have seen bad unemployment numbers again. I think the president is not happy with his poll numbers that across, nationally and in battleground states. Now this story first reported by the New York Times. As peter points out, the white house did not deny the underlying intelligence about russia offering bounty money. They simply said the president was not briefed, which raises a lot of questions, why wasnt the president , why wasnt the Vice President alerted to the fact this was going on . Right. Theres no good answer here. Either he did know and with that knowledge was still talking about bringing russian into the g7 and having all this talking about its important to get along with russia. He briefed . It is striking how careful these statements are from the white house to not dispute the facts of the Intelligence Report but at the same time dispute only only dispute the notion that the president and Vice President were briefed. It just its amazing to me to proactively admit that the president is kept in the dark of something this alarming. Chuck, we have just scratched the surface. If intelligence is true, whats the president s reaction now . He hasnt done anything since march. We will get more from you on meet the press. Chuck is joined by the secretary of health and human services, john bolton and new york governor andrew cuomo. We will be watching. A shooting overnight louisville. Its time for the highs and lows of the week. First high is to the display of solidarity in nascar around driver bubba wallace. A noose was found in his teams garage at talladega in alabama. The garage area has rallied around bubba wallace. On monday, dozens of wallaces fellow drivers and crew gathered to show their support, pushing his 43 car to the front of the line ahead of the geico 500 race. Wallace, the only fulltime africanamerican driver, was moved to tears by the group gesture. That moment came just one week after wallace successfully pushed nascar to ban the c Confederate Flag from the sport and the grounds around the races. He tweeted a photo that went viral writingfbi investigation the noose which was discovered by one of his crew members had been in that stall since october and was not directed at wallace, thank goodness. In response, bubba said he was relieved and that this should not detract from the unity we had and the progress we have made as a sport to be a more welcoming environment for all. Big changes in nascar led by bubba wallace. Our first low comes from the other end of the inspirational spectrum in sports. In addition to having one of the greatest names in the history of sports, Dallas Cowboys safety Haha Clinton Dix has a bear problem at his house. He shared on social media this week video from his Home Security camera showing a mama bear and her cub in the driveway etting close to his front door. Rolls up on his electric scooter, spots the bears, dumps his ride and takes off in the opposite direction with every bit of his nfl speed. Elite explosiveness there. The bears bolt away. He posted it to instagram writing, i play d. Gotta be ready to go. The pro bowler signed with the cowboys in march after playing last season for, you guessed it, the chicago bears. Haha is the nickname his grandmother gave him when he was a baby. We are glad she did. Our next high, a sold out performance at an opera house where a String Quartet celebrated the lifting of a lo only room of plants. Yes, that say capacity audience of 2,292 literal potted plants. The opera house shut down in mid march due to the coronavirus pandemic and reopened on monday with this beautiful botanical performance. The event called concert for the biocenter was conceived to highlight the value of art, music and nature. The plants didnt have all the fun. The performance was live stres m streamed for an audience at home. The plants were donated to local Health Care Workers as thanks for their work on the front lines in a country hit very hard by covid19. Even a potted plant looks elegant at the opera. Thats amazing. Our final low to the latest, perhaps inevitable, arguably creepy evolution of the face masks we have been wearing. A entrepreneur is making custom masks printed features so no ono wonder what you all it takes is a photo booth, software and a mobile app to print the mask that completes your face. These can be produced in person in Grocery Stores or ordered online for about 20. One woman here in the United States had a similar idea with her company maskalike which offers custom coverings that look more realistic. Yikes. The companys website says the smiley masks are sure to make people around you do double takes and have a brighter day. They are pretty cool. I do admire the innovation.
