The president at a rally last night announcing he will move a woman to the bench next week as the crowd chanted, fill that seat. Obamas pick four years ago was an allout fight. How will this play out in the middle of a campaign . America consumed by extreme weather. From wildfires in the west to hurricanes in the east, and why the historic disasters of this seas de to become the norm. Plus our sunday spotlight on the legacy of Justice Ginsburg as a pioneering advocate for women and a recent icon for Younger Generations chl. And then we will turn to a Higher Energy new sunday sitdown with grammy winner mogul d. J. Callum, and the daily affirmation he has turned into a cultural catch phrase. I wake up in the morning, i pray to god, i kiss my family, and i look in that mirror after i take a shower and say, we the best. And god is great. Im telling you the truth. A sunday sitdown with d. J. Callun plus another life well lived. First lets follstart with tension following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The president telling a rally that he will fill ginsburgs seat with just 45 days before the election. Democrats are looking for a fight and want a handful of republicans to join them. Garrett is at the white house. Good morning. Reporter it can be brutal in normal political times, and now with just 45 days before election day, these are anything but normal political times, and the fight shaping up for the future of this court should prove historic. With the supporters urging him to act overnight in north carolina, President Trump committing to replace the longestserving woman in the Supreme Courts history with another woman. I will be putting forth a nominee next week. It will be a woman, a very talented, very brilliant woman. Reporter multiple sources tell nbc news federal Appeals Court judge Amy Conan Barrett has become a frontrunner as President Trumps choice, but no decision has been made. Mitch mcconnell said he will move to get a vote, over the objections of democrats who says the winner of novembers election should get to decide who sits on the court. The republicans basically stole that seat the last time, and now theyre trying to do it again, and the public must speak up. Reporter democrats spoke to the precedence to even hold a hearing with president obama. The president said then that the next president should make the pick. Lindsey graham in 2016. I want you to use my words against me. If there is a republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year before the next term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let the next president , whoever it might be, make that nomination. You can use my words and you would be right. Reporter lindseyrecently sa President Trump regarding any vacancy after the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Reporter Merrick Garland didnt get a chance to move forward. That was in an Election Year. Why should your pick get to move forward in an Election Year . Thats the consequence of losing an election. When you lose an election, sometimes things dont work out well. Reporter the president may be stymied by fellow republicans. Susan collins said, the decision for the next senate seat should be made after november 3rd. We have an obligation. We won. Reporter so the question now is will the republicans have the vote . You heard from Susan Collins. Also Lisa Murkowski said she did not agree with sitting a justice before the election. All the republicans will need is 50 votes. Garrett, we got word yesterday federal officials intercepted an envelope addressed to the white house, the building behind you there containing the poison ricin. What can you tell us about that . Reporter they intercepted an envelope and took it to this building that investigates. They said this letter may have originated in canada. Willie . Glad they tracked that down. Thanks so much, garrett. Chuck todd is political moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. What a morning you have on meet the press. So much to talk about here. Youre so good about this. Lets talk about how this is going to happen. We heard in garretts piece, all the hypocrisy of what republicans said in 2016 versus what theyre sayinhiing about. We kn we know the democrats are trying to get a handful of republicans on their side. Lets say the president puts out his nominee next week. What happens between now and election day . Folks ive been talking to on both sides of the aisle say, look, a confirmation hearing, the naming and a confirmation hearing in october is very likely. Not many folks seem to think there is a plausible path to holding an actual vote on a Supreme Court nominee before election day. In fact, there is some thinking that in some ways Mitch Mcconnell might not have the votes. It might be easier for him to get the votes of, say, people like cory gardner or Susan Collins after election day, not before election day. Then theres President Trump who, in his own mind, he believes in some ways the scalia seat was one of the reasons that got skeptical republicans to, quote, come home, so leaving it out there almost as a carrot to incentivize people to vote is something the president wants. The most likely scenario is a naming, confirmation process, then, of course, an attempt at a confirmation after the election. But there is three potential scenarios after the election. Trump wins, then nominee gets confirmed. Trump loses but republicans hold the senate, its going to be a knockdown, dragout fight. Republicans will try. Well see if they have the votes. If democrats win the senate and the presidency, even though republicans have control, everybody i talked to said they could not imagine a scenario that republicans would have the vote to confirm anybody. Those are your three scenarios there post election. Its amazing. Youre rolling out a new nbc wall street journal poll today that shows just how solidified peoples minds are about this election. There is a small sliver of the population thats still deciding. What do you think the impact, if it plays out the way you just laid out, and thats hanging out there on election day, republicans will say thats how high the stakes are, democrats will say the same, its about the Supreme Court. What impact do you think that will have on the vote . Look, what impact did impeachment, pandemic, global recession, social unrest, now this . Nothing has seemed to change the trajectory of this race for two years now, which is Donald Trumps behind, its a referendum on him. I dont think this will change it, either. That doesnt mean the republican candidates really want to. Republican Senate Candidates in most states desperately want to change the subject. The question is, what will be on the minds of voters over the next six weeks, the virus or this court pick . Heres the thing. Every time republicans hoped it would be something else, it does seem like the virus is front and center. Today were hitting 200,000 deaths, willie. Yes, we are. Buckle up for the next six weeks. Chuck todd, thanks so much. Well look for so much more this morning on meet the press about the fight coming over the next Supreme Court justice. Among chucks guests, former president ial nominee and secretary of state, hillary clinton. That Supreme Court fight is underway in th chuck just said has now killed more than 200,000 americans, according to our latest nbc news count. Nbcs Morgan Chesky is in dallas with a look at how we got here. Good morning, morgan. Reporter good morning to you. For more than 200,000 americans, this virus has been lifeending, and as scientists race to find a working vaccine, the president and his own medical advisers coming to differing opinions on what our life looks like on the other side of this grim milestone. This morning a devastating chapter in the u. S. Fight against covid19. The virus death toll climbing above 200,000 americans. This week the cdc reversing guidelines after an outcry from health officials, claiming political interference by the trump administration. The cdc now stating, anyone who has come into close contact with a confirmed case should be tested, symptoms or not. The policies coming are which President Trump makes a big promise. 100 million vaccine doses by the end of this year. Hundreds of millions of doses will be available next month and we expect to have vaccines for every american by april. Reporter while early vaccines are expected this year, cdc Officials Say widespread availability will take longer. I think were probably looking at late second quarter, Third Quarter 2021. Reporter so how did we g the first covid19related death was on february 29th. By late may the virus had exploded, claiming the lives of 100,000 others. Today that grim number doubled as a growing vision of how to handle a pandemic continues. Dont make me wear a mask. Reporter becoming a growing mix with massive gatherings and parties. Sturgis was linked to a quarter million cases of covid19, a number of organizers call blatantly faulty part of a dire prediction that came as early as march from dr. Anthony fauci. Looking at what were seeing now, i would say between 100,000 and 200,000 cases, but i dont want to be held to that, because excuse me, deaths. B reporter but this week, President Trump blamed them for this. How . Thousands of americans are dying. Its true. It is what it is. Reporter lives lost coming from every corner of the country. And this week here in texas, due to a decrease in hospitalizations, Governor Greg Abbott is opening the state further, allowing 75 capacity at restaurants and other businesses. This as the state now has the third highest death toll in the country with more than 15,000 lives lost to covid19, that number doubling in just the last two months. Willie . 200,000 americans dead. This morning we are kicking off a speci look at the intersection of a rapidly changing climate with politics and a global pandemic. As 80 large fires burn across the west, overnight the bobcat fire outside los angeles grew to 142 square miles, fanned by strong winds and forcing new evacuations. Meanwhile this week, five named storms spun in the atlantic all at the same time. That has not happened since 1971. So what exactly is causing all of this . And is it too late to do something about it . Nbcs ann thompson has our sunday focus. Reporter the impact of Climate Change on full display this week. Parts of california ablaze, streets flooded along the gulf coast, air too thick to see through in portland, oregon. One side of the country on fire, another under watwater, and man asking what role Climate Change plays. In the case of wildfires, cla Climate Change is increasing the areas burned, more than doubling it since the 1980s. In the case of hurricanes, theyre bigger, theyre intensifying faster, theyre stronger and have a lot more rain associated with them today. So in effec so in effect, is Climate Change acteding like steroids . Pre priciselyprecisely. How can these two happen at the same time . We get dryer vegetation, so when a fire ignites, it burns a greater area. But when a storm comes along, there is more water vapor in the air for that storm to sweep up and dump on us. Is there any doubt in your mind that what were seeing are signals of a warming world . Absolutely not. We scientists are. I think the latest number of 99. 999 confident that what were seeing is indeed the impact of human choices on our planet. Reporter but President Trump is not as confident. It will start getting cooler. You just watch. I wish science agreed with you. I dont think science knows, actually. Reporter on a trip to california this week, he insisted the wildfires are the result of bad Forest Management after previously suggesting breaking the forest floor was the solution. The only place that raking would work is right out your back door to try to prevent fire from burning up to your back door. Reporter forestry professor dr. Wally covington has worked on this issue for 45 years. While raking may be farfetched, he says we should be thinning forests, removing small trees and conducting controlled burns and stop building in fireprone areas. How much time do we really have to slow this problem down or stop this problem . He funding that we now have, in 40 years time, we could be on top of this problem. Reporter a problem that today in california is bigger than anything before. What makes this fire season different than all the others . The fire season in 2020 is extraordinary almost no matter how you look at it. The largest fire, the most acres burned in a single season, most acres burned in a single day. Reporter and its not over. All of california has a month, if not two months, of fire season left to go. Reporter do you expect it to be as intense . Its always possible we could get lucky with some early rain, but we usually have a dry season. Ann, good morning. Climate change is a global phenomenon. Trump announced three years ago that he would drop out of the paris routine, which could take plac
